Canadian History Students Bring WWI Artifacts to Life
This fall, Ms. Hansler’s Grade 10 Canadian History class took a hands-on approach to learning about World War I, exploring a collection of artifacts on loan from the Canadian War Museum. The collection included everything from trench art and periscopes to service jackets, nurses’ aprons, gas masks, barbed wire, shell casings, and historical photographs—each piece a tangible connection to the experiences of Canadian soldiers.
Students were tasked with researching a specific artifact and sharing their findings with classmates, explaining not only its use but also its impact on the lives of soldiers and civilians during the war. From understanding the function of a trench raid rattle to exploring the stories behind attestation papers and photographs, the class gained a deeper appreciation of the human experiences behind the history.
The project not only enhanced students’ research and presentation skills but also offered a unique perspective on the sacrifices, creativity, and resilience of Canadians during the Great War.
