The Grove Journal: Building Reflection, Creativity, and Growth

At the beginning of the school year, Lakefield introduced The Grove Journal, giving students a personal space to pause, reflect, and explore their experiences. Every Friday during Advisory meetings, students spend ten minutes writing, drawing, or expressing themselves creatively—a simple habit with powerful benefits. Journaling has been shown to reduce stress, boost resilience, and support self-awareness and emotional growth.

This November, we’ve introduced a 30-day journaling challenge, encouraging staff and students alike to explore new ways to engage with their journals. Staff are finding creative approaches to integrate journaling into daily routines and school life, such as:
  • Short prompts at the start of a class or meeting
  • Mini journaling rituals during team practices or clubs
  • Creative workshops, including watercolour painting and junk journaling
  • Sharing personal journaling habits to inspire students
Parents can support the practice by asking students about their journals and noticing how they’re exploring reflection and creativity each day. By weaving journaling into daily life, students are developing a lifelong habit that promotes balance, curiosity, and personal growth—values at the heart of Lakefield College School.
