1st Girls’ Hockey
Coaches: April Looije, June Saunders
Despite the snow storm and impending freezing rain, 1st Girls’ Hockey team hosted Branksome Hall this past Wednesday. Missing some day students, the lineups were jumbled but the girls were excited and ready to play. Branksome came out hard, as the ladies trailed 3-1 after the first period. A beautiful end to end goal from Madia McGowan in the dying seconds of the first sparked some energy in the team. Lakefield came out strong in the second with an awesome team effort, and pass and play by seniors Lily Coates, Ally Lovick and Kit Wright that resulted in a crossbar. Branksome did not let up however, even with nine players, they were strong right until the end. Another amazing goal for Lakefield came mid way through the second from Ally Lovick. As the team is continued to improve, coaches Saunders and Looije are proud of their play today, regardless of the score, it was a tight match.

1st Alpine
Coaches: Peter Andras, Darren Moffatt, Rob Fleming
The 1st Alpine team travelled to Alpine Ski Club in Collingwood on Wednesday, January 23 - it was a long drive but the team pulled into Collingwood ready to tackle the conditions. It was a really tough day on the hill! Very wet and very icy! It started really well and both school-trained teams and there were many exceptional first runs. Vincent Dahm, Matti Boltze and Magnus Hepburn were all in the top 5 after the first run and the girls; Emmi and Keely Matsusaki and Dana Elent were in the top ten again!

Both School Trained teams were doing very well and we were in first following the first run. Then the rain hit and the snow got very heavy! They decided not to re-set for the second run as it would have made for large ruts to cross and a dangerous line on the course. Every turn was icy - judging by the fact that everyone was falling and slipping on the course. There were large numbers of DNF's (did not finish) but they all held on to finish!

The Boys won the race today in a commanding fashion with Vincent Dahm in first, Magnus Hepburn in 3rd and Matti Boltze in 4th!

The Girls ended in 6th today as two of the four girls DNF'ed in the tough conditions but Emmi and Keely (despite the ice) were able to finish their runs with great tenacity and spirit. Keely finished in 6th and Emmi placed 8th.

The Open level athletes had some exceptionally tough conditions as well but everyone pushed on and gained some great experience.
