Bell Let’s Talk
This week, students and staff took part in #BellLetsTalk initiatives throughout the week.
“In September 2010, Bell Let’s Talk began a new conversation about Canada’s mental health. At that time, most people were not talking about mental illness. But the numbers spoke volumes about the urgent need for action. Millions of Canadians, including leading personalities, engaged in an open discussion about mental illness, offering new ideas and hope for those who struggle, with numbers growing every year.
As a result, institutions and organizations large and small in every region received new funding for access, care and research from Bell Let’s Talk and from governments and corporations that have joined the cause. Bell’s total donation to mental health programs now stands at $100,695,763.75.”
The week began with a great Chapel by Grade 12 students David Williams and Iona Pena, Seniors-in-Charge of the Health Centre, who shared what Bell Let’s Talk is all about, and what we can do to help end the stigma around mental health. Students sold “Mugs of Hugs” in support of CMHA (the Canadian Mental Health Association), and shared what mental health means to them in the photo booth. There have been so many conversations around what mental health is, how if affects all of us in different ways, and what we can do to help each other.
Grade 10 student Catherine Kim shares her advice for those struggling, “You shouldn’t be ashamed of the things that are going on in your life, because there are so many people that are here for you, that you can talk to, and can get you through this.”
Did You Know:
- All our residential staff and staff going on the Global Learning trips are now trained in mental health first aid—and by the end of the year, all our faculty will be trained
- This year, a group of dedicated students initiated an LCS Jack Chapter. The LCS Chapter’s mission is to educate and enrich the LCS community through student-led initiatives that foster happiness and physical and mental well-being.
