Athletics Action: Nordic Ski Highlights

By Mr. Todd Harris

On February 8-9, our Provincial-level athletes travelled to the Eastern Canadian Championships in Lennoxville, Quebec to compete against many of the best skiers in Canada. While the course and the competition were intimidating, our skiers took it as an opportunity to push themselves to new heights. Aidan Melville '21 impressed in the longest race of his young career by holding on for 3 laps to a group of University skiers before dropping them near the finish of his 15 kilometre race.

At our CISAA Championships on February 12, LCS dominated with individual Golds across the board (Rowan Harris-Stoertz '22 in Junior Girls, Thomas Larson '22 in Junior Boys, Anna Harris '20 in Senior Girls and Aidan Melville '21 in Senior Boys) and three Silvers (Shenda Fitton '22 in Junior Girls, Ben Freeman '23 in Junior Boys, and Hinako Hotta '21 in Senior Girls). Our Senior Girls (Anna Guest '21, Cassie Mesburis '20, Hinako Hotta '21, Anna Harris '20) and Junior Boys (Pen Murray '23, Mateo Wealch '22, Ben Freeman '23, Thomas Larson '22) also won Gold medals in the Team event.

The OFSAA Provincial Championship on February 20 gave many on our team a chance to cap their great season by competing against the best high school Nordic skiers in the province. With between 150 and 190 skiers in each race, this event can be intimidating, but once again we had break out performances by many. Of particular note were Ben Freeman '23's 70th place in the Junior Boys High School division, Aidan Melville '21's 19th place in the Senior Boys Open division, Thomas Larson '22's 9th place in the Junior Boys Open division, and Anna Harris '20's 6th place overall for Senior Girls.

Cassie Mesburis '20, Hinako Hotta '21, Jana Rubel '22, Nicole Liu '21, Caroline Chen '21, Wulfric Harris-Stoertz '20, Wellesley Yu '21, Mateo Wealch '22, Pen Murray '23, Rowan Harris-Stoertz '22, Shenda Fitton '22 and Ilana Mohamed '21 also represented LCS at OFSAA with great success.
