Exploring False Narratives

Mr. Gilfillan’s Grade 11 American History class has been studying the Vietnam War and applying their learning to current events. Through a “Zoom In” photo activity this week, students analyzed what was taking place in the photograph while drawing on what they’ve learned so far. Piece by piece, the class built a narrative based on what they could see in the photo as the whole picture was slowly revealed to them. They were also challenged to consider the historical narratives which have been presented to them and how false narratives can tell a different story. This then prompted the question of what types of narratives exist today with a discussion about how this also changes in different regions. This offers students an invaluable opportunity to hear various experiences of shared events.
