Sunset Pontoon Boat Rides with Ms. Kee

At LCS, our vision is to inspire teenagers to become leaders who care, connect, and contribute. To facilitate this vision, we aim to provide opportunities for our students to reflect on and find meaning in their programming throughout the school year. Throughout the past month, Ms. Kee has been meeting and reconnecting with every student in house groups in a casual, lighthearted setting in order to share time reflecting upon their LCS experience (an annual commitment she makes each fall and spring). Since September, she has invited students to the waterfront to enjoy an evening boat ride chat on Lake Katchewanooka,  to learn more about their experiences across all grades, and to hear about what they’d like to see change, and what they believe is working well.

Ms. Kee received positive and practical feedback on a wide variety of topics, ranging from the Dining Hall menu (popular requests include more pizza, Treat Tuesdays, Sunday desserts, and chips with salsa), our daily schedule (“I appreciate the breaks between classes.” and “Can teachers bring us outside more?”), our athletics program (“We should do Friday Night Lights every season!” and “Will we get Ted Pope day?”), student voice (“I like that you’re asking our opinion.”), academic support (“Can we extend our wifi access if we have AP classes?” and “We need more math support” [see below for an announcement about math support]), COVID rules (“When can we have guests in our rooms?”), and more.

Our students shared their visions for the school, with many creative ideas to improve upon their individual and collective experiences. During Chapel on Monday, Ms. Kee reflected back on these suggestions and expressed gratitude for our students’ desire to be involved in positive change at the school. She also outlined the process for making changes and reviewed the timeline for recommendations to be implemented. We look forward to seeing how our students take advantage of other opportunities to be leaders in our community. From student events to global issues, there are countless productive ways for them to explore their passions and interests with the support of our faculty and staff.

We are excited for more fun opportunities to connect as a community this year and we love seeing our students channel their Lakefield spirit and leadership skills!
