Flourish Fiesta | Experiencing The Power of Positive Thinking

Saturday, September 10, 2022, marked the last day of Opening Week at Lakefield College School. While our returning students arrived on campus to be greeted by our Grads, our new students participated in the third annual Flourish Fiesta event at our waterfront.

Flourish Fiesta is an event held every September, focussed on the Positive Psychology practices we follow at Lakefield College School. Ms. Dalrymple, Director of THRIVE—Lakefield’s wellbeing initiative that promotes positive habits and practices—started the day by explaining how positive psychology can help individuals get the most out of life by focussing on positive events and influences. The habits and practices we strive for at LCS are known to improve our ability to focus, remember, and process information, contributing to improved wellbeing and better performance.

This year, 180 new students joined us and participated in this event. Starting at 9:30 a.m., students trekked down to the waterfront to enjoy the morning activities (fluffy clouds, blue sky, and sparkling water!). The summery 28℃ weather was a pleasant surprise that made outdoor activities even more enjoyable.

Throughout the morning, students circulated through a variety of activities including :
  • Walking on our mindfulness trail to experience forest bathing (the Japanese art of absorbing the forest atmosphere)
  • Writing words of wisdom on a post-it note to create a “Wisdom wall” for others to seek inspiration and meaning from
  • Practicing mindfulness through a mindful balance exercise
  • Committing to performing two acts of kindness this year
  • Writing gratitude cards to express gratitude for someone in their lives
  • Taking photos of their Duchenne smiles (a smile that reaches your eyes and releases endorphins in the body)
  • Decorating “permission” rocks to serve as a reminder to honour all human emotions
  • And more!
In all, Flourish Fiesta was a glorious day of sunshine, which added to the experience as students and staff connected with each other in the beautiful natural environment that we are very fortunate to enjoy at LCS.
