Our Grads Are Going Places | University Destinations for the Class of 2023

In the midst of completing their final assignments and preparing for exams, our Grads took time to celebrate their plans for life beyond Lakefield. A Lakefield College School tradition, our Grade 12 students decorated posters with their postsecondary destinations and posed for photos to celebrate this exciting time in their lives. This is just the first of many celebrations for our Grads, but it is one they have come to eagerly anticipate. Our Guidance staff enthusiastically celebrated with them as they celebrated their collective achievements. This moment represented countless hours of hard work and effort put into both their coursework and applications over the course of the school year.

The Class of 2023 is to be congratulated on receiving over 440 offers of admission from across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe! While final scholarship details are still forthcoming, as of this writing, our graduating class has been offered scholarships and other awards totalling over $2.3 million—a testament to their strength and academic potential.

Our Grads received offers of admission from top institutions across the globe, including the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Imperial College London in England, and multiple offers from the University of California system. As in past years, however, most of our Grads have chosen to remain closer to home, with just over 70 percent of the graduating class opting to study within Canada. Half of this group will study at universities located in Ontario, with Queen’s being the top destination overall. McGill University is the school of choice for eight percent of the Class of 2023, while nine percent are heading to the east coast and four percent are heading to the University of British Columbia on the west coast.

Beyond Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom remain popular destinations for our students. South of the border, students will attend Boston University (Boston, Massachusetts), the California Institute of Technology (Pasadena, California), Hofstra University (Long Island, New York), Parsons School of Design (New York, New York), Penn State University (University Park, Pennsylvania), Rollins College (Winter Park, Florida), the University of California Irvine (Orange County, California) and the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, California). Our U.K.-bound students are enrolling at the University of St. Andrews, King’s College London, and Durham University, and we are confident that they will embrace the academic rigour and unique opportunities that lie ahead. Our graduates are also crossing the Atlantic to enroll at IE University and ICADE (both in Spain), as well as at University College Utrecht and the University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands).

The combination of strengths, talents, and convictions in this year’s graduating class is also visible in their program choices. While just over a third of the graduating class will be pursuing studies in the Social Sciences and Humanities, many are headed for unique and specialized programs including direct-entry Law and International Relations, as well as dual degree options in Philosophy, Human Behaviour, Economics, and History.

This year there is an almost equal split between those pursuing degrees in the sciences (including health and computer science) and those entering business and commerce programs. Combined, these comprise over 40% of the overall program selection made by the Grads, while 12 percent of the Class of 2023 are entering engineering programs. There is a growing interest in the fields of teaching and education, architecture, and fine arts, as evidenced by the roughly 10 percent of our students opting to study within these disciplines upon graduation.

There is little doubt that our Grads will be led by their dynamic interests to make positive, significant, and lasting contributions that will enrich many areas of society. Regardless of their specific destinations and choices, we are confident that they are ready to embrace this next phase of their academic careers and flourish.

We are exceptionally proud of all that the Class of 2023 has accomplished and wish them continued success in all of their future endeavours!
