Counting Success: LCS Students Make Their Mark at National Mathematics Contest

On Wednesday, April 10, six exceptional LCS students who enjoy recreational mathematics were invited to attend the Canadian Team Mathematics Contest at the University of Waterloo.

Our students competed, for fun, in teams of six against other teams from all across Canada.

The competition was comprised of three parts:

First, an individual portion consisting of 10 questions.

Second, a team portion consisting of 25 questions with only 45 minutes to complete the set. That is far more than any one individual could complete in the time provided. As such, strong communication among team members and some good strategies are required to be successful.

Finally, the competition finished with half an hour to complete several rounds of a relay, where the answer that one team member produces for a question must be used by the second team member to complete their question, and so on.

Interludes between competition segments included opportunities to socialize with students from other schools and to have fun with activities like a scavenger hunt and musical bingo.

Our LCS team represented the school well with their results. Most importantly, the day was filled with collaboration and good humour!
