Celebrating Light, Unity, and Joy: Diwali at Lakefield College School

On Monday, October 20, LCS students and staff recently came together to celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, a vibrant occasion that honours the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. Celebrated by over one billion people worldwide, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and some Buddhists, Diwali is a time for family, reflection, and sharing joy with others.

The celebration began in Chapel, where members of our CCC class, Connor ’26, Tessa ’26, Shakira ’26, Kevin ’26, and SLC members Sohun ’26, and Neil ’26, shared reflections on Diwali’s history, traditions, and significance. Their presentation explored how Diwali is celebrated around the world through lighting diyas, sharing sweets, and spending time with loved ones.

Students Sohun ’26 and Neil ’26, shared personal stories about how their families mark the occasion—from creating rangoli patterns and lighting sparklers to enjoying traditional foods like idli, dosa, and sambar.

Following Chapel, the celebrations continued in the Dining Hall with a special Diwali-inspired lunch planned by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team, featuring Butter Chicken, Samosas, and Aloo Gobi, along with Mango Lassi and Dahl from the Marché. The International Club also organized Diwali sweet treats and a Rangoli activity for students to enjoy over lunch.

As Neil ’26 shared in closing, “Diwali is more than just a festival; it is a celebration of hope, unity, and joy.”

By learning about Diwali and honouring the traditions of our students and families, LCS continues to celebrate the diversity that strengthens our community and brightens our collective light.
