On Friday, February 24, Bonhomme Carnaval (the mascot of the Quebec City Winter Carnival) came to Lakefield College School to celebrate our very own
Carnaval with Grade 9 and 10 French students.
The afternoon began with a cheering parade of student groups - les castors, les bûcherons, les voyageurs, and les caribous - who welcomed Le Bonhomme to the School. The groups then headed to their different Carnaval stations: snowshoe and canoe relays, snow sculptures, the sugar shack, broomball, and maple taffy.
Students enjoyed a challenging contest at the relay station where they had to strap on
snowshoes, run around a post and return to hula hoop while the next teammate prepared for the run. The canoe challenge, in an attempt to mimic the races across the St. Lawrence River, had each team carry their canoe up the field and back. The entire team had to hold on to the canoe throughout. Next, teams were given time to create and paint a snow sculpture/relief.
The
sugar shack was a popular station hosted by student Victoria Tenthorey’s grandfather George and great-uncle Serge who taught students how to make traditional beaver tail pastries (queue de castor) topped with brown sugar and cinnamon (or in the traditional Swiss style, topped with caraway seeds).
At the Bob Armstrong Rink, students played
broomball, warming up their team spirits before heading to the
maple taffy station (tire d'érable) where they enjoyed hot maple syrup poured onto fresh snow and scooped up with a popsicle stick - a truly Canadian experience!
Thank you to teachers Libby Dalrymple, Mary Howell, Jennifer Moore, Louise Paolo di Prisco, and David Walsh for their hardwork in organizing this event. Special thanks also goes to Jon Holmes, Jen Horrigan, Adam Jackman, Adrienne Wood, Manal Stamboulie, and Sarah Young for their assistance organizing and supervising the students and stations.
