In Memorium: The Turtle Race

In memoriam: The Turtle Race

The Turtle Race has been a tradition at Lakefield College School for a long time. On the day before Closing in June, nature-loving students find a turtle down by the lake and bring it to the outdoor basketball court to race in front of the whole school. Then the turtles are returned to their natural habitat.

As you may have heard, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has informed us that we may no longer conduct the Turtle Race. While we are sad to see the end of a tradition, we understand that the needs of the turtles must come first.

Still, many young people have gained an appreciation for nature by being involved in the Turtle Race fun. Perhaps I’m kidding myself, but I do wonder if Ducks Unlimited would have as much support for its programs to protect natural wetlands, if duck hunting were abolished.

Oh well, I hope you enjoy this week’s video. It is presented as a memorial for one of the longest-standing Grove traditions – The Turtle Race.

I made the mistake in grade 13 of looking for a turtle with Tam Matthews. He was at the Grove for eons and never found one to race. I thought I would change his luck, but nothing doing. Shame to see the race go, but Lifer the oil rig comment is sadly too true.

Hi Todd! I think after all these years you can start calling me "Richard" ... or "Lifer" if you prefer ... ;-) Thanks for your support of this Blog!

Hi Mr.Life, Enjoyed the turtle race memorium rant. Good perspective and satirical closer. I remember back to our temporary housing of a snapper in Matthews House back in my day. Interested to see what you come up with as a replacement tradition. Hope you are well.
