July 14th was a significant day as a group of Lakefield College School alumni came together to support a special cause near to their hearts. The mission of OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network is to secure, in an expeditious way, donors for Canadian bone marrow transplant patients and for patients abroad. The group was inspired by fellow alumnus Darren Bishop ’03, who was recently diagnosed with leukemia, and is currently waiting for a bone marrow transplant.
Darren hosted a barbeque in Toronto that saw more than 125 people come out to support OneMatch. As Darren’s website says, the purpose of the barbeque and continuing efforts is “to try and get as many people as possible to volunteer to be "typed" for bone marrow to help support fellow Canadians continuing their battle with cancer and specifically leukemia.” CityNews was on hand for the barbeque, and the party made the evening newscast. Scroll to 4:45 to see the story.
There are 977 Canadians who are waiting for a bone marrow transplant, and OneMatch is trying to find a match for everyone in need worldwide. To be “typed”, you don’t need to go to the hospital or a doctor’s office; simply register online and OneMatch will send you package with a swab kit for you to return for testing and wait to see if you will be a match for someone in need.
The OneMatch awareness has been spreading through the LCS community through social media networks thanks to Darren and his friends and family. Many alumni have been “typed”, and many more have agreed to be “typed”. Thank you to the LCS community for all the support in spreading the OneMatch message.
