1st Boys’ Rugby
Coaches: Garret Hart, Adam Janssen
On Friday, April 25, the 1st Boys’ Rugby team hosted Royal St. George’s College just one day after the field was cleared to play on following a long winter.  The game proved to be a great battle between two teams that displayed both strength and speed.

RSGC stuck first, with a try that was scored near the corner by the captain Marshal Hawthorn.  RSGC continued to put pressure on the LCS defence.  The boys from The Grove showed grit and determination as they stopped phase after phase of attacks by the opposing team.  However, after giving up a penalty on the LCS 22 meter line, RSGC capitalized scoring the second try of the game, making the score 10-0.  LCS stepped up the pressure and strung together several attacking phases, which resulted in RSGC giving up a penalty within their half.  Jaron Kaller opted to kick and slotted the ball through the uprights for 3 points.  The score at half was 10-3.

LCS continued the pressure in the second half, with some great rucking by the forward pack.  The backs also stepped up their game led by Charles Laframboise and Max Lambert making some great runs.  It looked as if LCS was destined to score when Max knocked the ball on one meter from the try line.  RSGC used the missed opportunity to counter and were able to score another try.  LCS continued to battle back, and only a few minutes later Scott Garland linked up with Max to score a try for LCS.  Unfortunately time ran out with the final score of 15-8 in favour of RSGC.

1st Girls’ Rugby
Coaches: Leslie Schumacher, Rachel Cazabon
The 1st Girls’ Rugby team faced off against Appleby College for their first game of the season.  The home game brought out a number of fans, despite the rain, and the girls fought a great battle.  This was the first ever rugby game for many of the girls.  Despite a loss of 28-5, the girls showed incredible energy and passion for the game.  A hard fought first half had them down by 17 points, but they worked hard to hold Appleby back in the second half, with Katie Garland scoring the first try of the season.  From the experienced players to those hitting the pitch for the first time, each girl demonstrated their ability to work together and help one another out.  Way to go Grove!

1st Boy’s Tennis
Coaches: Derek Doucet, Sarah Thompson
On Saturday, April 26, the 1st Boys’ Tennis team hosted their first exhibition match against local U15 students from Kenner Collegiate as well as members from the Inter County Tennis Association League. Although it was not the nicest weather with cold temperatures around 5 degrees Celsius, there were no complaints heard from any of the boys.

The day started with Christopher Bierich and Aryaman Panwar playing as our top doubles team against Blake Butler and Ryan Pomig. Christopher and Aryaman were on fire with their aggressive forehands and strong serves resulting in a victory of 8-0. Our second doubles team, Alex Kam and Michael Hudson, had a tougher match against Beau Hayer and Jared Thomas but still came out on top defeating them 8-6. Both Alex and Michael had great baseline shots but also proved aggressive at net when they needed to be. Our third doubles were Ross Hutchinson and Julius Siekmann, they played a very close match against Christian Pascahlis and Thomas Miller that finished with a tiebreaker and our boys winning 8-7 overall. Ross placed the final serve in with ease, not cracking under the pressure of a tiebreaker. Taylor and Tristan Walsh, our twin team, were extremely fast on the courts, chasing down every shot and never giving up. Ivan Sun and Julius had a tough loss at 4-8 later that morning but both made some great shots and put forth a solid effort throughout the match.

We were able to fit in quite a few doubles and singles matches throughout the morning, which was a great opportunity for the boys to warm up for our upcoming season. Everyone demonstrated exceptional leadership and sportsmanship throughout the games. They were congratulating each other on shots well done and being extremely supportive of their teammates. It was a great start to our season!

1st Girls’ Soccer
Coaches: Janice Runza, David Brown
The 1st Girls' Soccer team participated in an exhibition tournament at Trent University on Friday, April 25.  At the end of a long, cold and windy day, the team felt successful with their record of 1 win, 1 loss and 1 tie.  Congratulations to Karen Collins for scoring the goals for LCS!  The team played another exhibition game against a local Peterborough 'Rep' team but was defeated.  The girls battled the rainy conditions and struggled early in the game to find their footing.  They came back in the second half denying any additional goals, with LCS's Karen Collins scoring for us yet again!  The team is focussed on preparing for their first league game against TCS on Friday, May 2.  Despite the challenging weather this week the girls are aware that we need to work hard for a tough albeit short soccer season.  The coaches are confident in the strength of this team and are anticipating a great season.

Jr. Boys’ Tennis
Coaches: Derek Doucet, Sarah Thompson
This past Wednesday, the Jr. Boys’ Tennis team travelled to Toronto to play Bayview Glen at the Mayfair East Racquet Club. Chistopher Bierich, our first singles player, was hitting winner after winner against his BVG opponent whom Christopher defeated 8-2. Aryaman Panwar played second singles also defeating his opponent 8-2. Aryaman played some great slice backhands and beautiful topspin forehands. Alex Kam was our third singles, and he also defeated his opponent with ease winning 8-1. He played with consistency and finesse, placing the ball exactly where he wanted it to go.

Our first and second doubles teams also came out on top. Julius Siekmann and Michael Hudson played first doubles winning 8-6. They played against some strong hitters but they kept their composure throughout the match. Julius made some great volleys at net and Michael played a strong baseline game.  It was definitely a hard fought win. The Walsh twins, Taylor and Tristan, were quick on their feet and smart with their ball placement as they defeated their opponents 8-2. Our last game was an exhibition game played by Ross Hutchinson and Ivan Sun against Bayview Glen’s first and second singles players - some very heavy hitters! The LCS boys fought hard while making some great plays as they managed to take 5 games off this top team! It was a very exciting game to end of the day.

Overall LCS won 40 to 16 against Bayview Glen, a great start to our CISAA season!
