Rock Climbing
Coaches: Stuart Lee
Bouldering is a fundamental component of the climbing program at LCS. As can be seen from the time-lapse video, fun and learning are also the goals of the climbing regimen. Last summer we were able to re-set the whole bouldering cave so that effectively means that we have a brand new bouldering cave with 30 new boulder problems. The climbers this year did a bouldering challenge to see who could climb the most on one day; the person who climbed the most in the female category was Tess Wilson with an average of 26 problems, and in the male category was Adam Theissen with an average of 30 problems. Throughout the course of the three terms we added even more difficult problems which gave the more advanced climbers projects to work on. We are looking forward to next season to see who can improve the most in our on-site facility.

1st Girls’ Soccer
Coaches: Janice Runza, David Brown
Lakefield College School's 1st Girls' Soccer team defeated Hawthorn School on Wednesday in the quarter finals, with a score of 4-0.  Goal scorers were Karen Collins (2), Becca Garrison and Josephine Boellhoef.  As LCS has secured 1st place in the Eastern Division we will host the semis and finals on Friday, May 23.  LCS is well aware that they have their work cut out for them as they will face the 2nd place team in the Western Division on Friday morning.  The girls are anticipating tough games ahead and are up for the challenge.  Well done team!

1st Girls’ Rugby
Coaches: Leslie Schumacher, Rachel Cazabon
In the last match up of the season, the 1st Girls’ Rugby team came up against Havergal College.  On a hot spring day at The Grove, the LCS girls played their best game of the season with a win of 34-5.  The girls have come a long way this season and showed off how well they can come together and work as a team.  With trys scored by Paty Ambe, Katie Garland, Maggie Sirois, Monica Scrocchi and Chloe Arshagouni all before the second half, the LCS girls were determined to dominate the game.  Abby Lindsay, a first year kicker for the team, made two successful conversions to put us over 30 points. After a well-deserved half time break, the second half was spent holding off Havergal with hard hits and solid defensive strategies.  It's a season to be proud of and a great way to end off the year.  Way to go, Grove!

1st Track and Field

After a short season of endless snowy weather and fighting for training space, the 1st Track and Field team put their hard-earned skills to the test at the CISAA Track and Field Championships last week. Jr. Boys’ Tennis
Coaches: Derek Doucet, Sarah Thompson
On Tuesday, May 20th our Jr. Boys’ Tennis team defeated Greenwood College 3-2. Christopher Bierich played one of his strongest matches of the season in first singles winning 8-0. He didn't seem to miss a shot! Aryaman Panwar had a very exciting match lasting over an hour and won 8-4! Alex Kam powerfully defeated his opponent 8-4 in third singles.

Our doubles teams had very close and tough games. Julius Siekmann and Ross Hutchinson were defeated 4-8 but they had a well fought battle. They played two strong and very aggressive players in first doubles. Taylor and Tristan Walsh had a very long match in second doubles where they finally were defeated 7-8, losing in the tiebreak.

We have seen so much improvement from the boys this season! We are eager to see how they do in the final tournament at Mayfair West in Toronto!

1st Boys’ Rugby
Coaches: Garret Hart, Adam Janssen
On Wednesday, May 21, Lakefield College School hosted Royal St. George’s College for the Senior Boys Division II Rugby semi-final.  The teams meet earlier in the season in a match that saw RSGC edge out LCS for the win.  Both teams knew it would be a tough battle. RSGC started the first half strong, putting pressure on the LCS defence.  After several phases of solid play, the hooker from RSGC broke the line and scored the opening try.  LCS quickly answered back; Max Lambert scored a hard fought try as he broke three tackles.  Jaron Kaller converted the try for an additional two points.  The back and forth continued, as RSGC’s forwards continued to run the ball and scored their second try of the match, which they also converted.  A few minutes from half-time, a great run by Caleb Weatherbee led to a diving try; again it was converted by Jaron Kaller.  The half-time score was 14-12 in favour of LCS.

A few minutes into the second half, Royal St George’s Captain took a bit hit from Seamus Smith and could not finish the game.  However, RSGC proved they were not ready to give up, and continued to keep the ball within the forwards to make hard yards.  The efforts were rewarded with their third try of the game, which was converted.  With only ten minutes left in the match, Charlie Laframboise kicked the ball over the RSGC line and deep into their half.  Keifer Stevenson put pressure on the full-back allowing Jaron Kaller to capitalize on a mistake to score the tying try.  The match ended in a 19-19 draw.

The game would now be decided based on penalty kicks, from three locations on the field.  Jaron Kaller kicked for LCS and went three for three, winning the game for LCS.  Lakefield will now face Hillfield Strathallen College in the final in Hamilton on Saturday, May 24.

1st Boys’ Softball
Coaches: Gerry Bird, Jen Horrigan
This past Tuesday, May 19, the LCS Division I Slow-pitch team’s regular season ended on a fun note (depending on which team you talk to!) when the school’s current squad took on a team comprised of LCS slow-pitch alumni from the past five years, at Douglas Field in Lakefield.  It was a somewhat lop-sided contest, as the nine former players in attendance showed that swinging a softball bat is a skill that, once mastered, is not easily lost.  Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable experience for all.

The alumni game was also good preparation for the hard-hitting Division I teams that the school’s current squad would face the following day, at the League Championship tournament.  In the first game, the LCS squad brought their 4-0 record to the Town Park diamond in Richmond Hill against Appleby College.  Appleby jumped out to a 2- 0 lead in the top of the first inning, but LCS countered with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the first.  The grey and green added 5 more runs in each of the third and sixth innings, en route to an exciting 13-12 win and a berth in the championship game.  Third baseman, Andrew Avard, was 3 for 4 at the plate, with 3 runs scored and 3 runs driven in.  As usual, veteran pitcher, Oliver Mackenzie, was masterful on the mound and was an equally potent offensive threat – going 1 for 2, with a solo shot homerun, 2 walks and 2 runs scored.  First baseman, Blair Watson, also scored twice, while Jamie Murray, Nic Nemeczek, and the catching tandem of Andrew Heffernan and Dane Armstrong contributed 2 RBI apiece.

In the championship game, the LCS infield defence got off to a rough start and the hard-hitting Hillfield team was quick to capitalize, jumping out to a 10-4 lead after two innings of play.  By the end of the fifth inning, LCS had battled back and held a 14-11 lead, but it changed hands a couple of more times before Hillfield, who had won home field advantage in a coin toss, scratched out a nail-biting 18-17 win in the final inning.

Along the way, there were nerve-wracking breaks for both teams, beginning when Lakefield’s Andrew Avard launched a ball that at first glance, seemed destined to become his second homer of the game, but which bounced off the top of the left-centre field fence and back onto the field of play.  For their part, miscommunication between two Hillfield infielders on what should have been a routine pop-up to end the game almost cost them dearly, as it resulted in the ball popping in and out of the second baseman’s glove, allowing LCS to momentarily tie and take the lead.
In the championship game, Andrew Avard, went 2 for 2, with a homerun and a double, 2 walks, 2 RBI, and 4 runs scored.  Calum Cook was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate, with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI, while Jamie Murray and Craig Stark each drove in and scored a pair.  Pitcher, Oliver Mackenzie continued his hot hitting and disciplined approach at the plate, going 2 for 2 with 2 doubles, 2 bases on balls, 3 runs scored, and 3 runs batted in.  Other runs and RBI were contributed by Carter McKnight, Nik Nemeczek, Dylan Purves, and Dane Armstrong.  Although it was a disappointing finish to a fun and successful season, LCS coaches, Gerry Bird, Jen Horrigan, along with assistant coaches (and former players) Matt Reesor and Greg Smith, are extremely proud of the entire team’s efforts , and congratulate the players on their silver medal finish in the eight team, Division I league.

Jr. Boy’s Tennis
Coaches: Derek Doucet, Sarah Thompson
The Jr. Boys’ Tennis team played in the CISAA final tournament today at Mayfair in Toronto. Unfortunately we had a tough loss against Appleby College 2-3. We then moved to the consolation round where we defeated Bayview Glen 4-1. This moved us to the consolation finals which we won 3-2 against Greenwood College.
Against Greenwood Christopher Bierich easily defeated his opponent 8-1, playing a consistently aggressive game with killer backhands. Aryaman Panwar won his match 8-2 playing with lots of spin and with a big smile on his face the whole time! Alex Kam won 8-4 playing with his huge forehand and making some amazing winners.
Our doubles teams had some very close games. Julius Siekmann and Michael Hudson were defeated 4-8 but played a great game at net with some long rallies and great gets. Tristan and Taylor Walsh played their best tennis of the season against two very strong players but were unfortunately also defeated 5-8. Taylor had really strong ground strokes and Tristan was putting away his volleys.
It was a great day and some incredible tennis to watch!
