A Feat of Engineering

By Samson Tso '15

On March 4, a group of 16 enthusiastic students attended the annual engineering week challenge held at the Evinrude Centre in Peterborough.

The aim of the challenge is to encourage students to cultivate their interest in engineering and to provide them with the opportunity to meet local engineers. In this year's challenge, an iPhone was dropped from a height of 5 meters and students were responsible for building a lander to prevent any impact of the phone. The group that designed and built the lander that delivered the least collision force to the phone while also landing as close to the given target as possible won the challenge.

A second award was given to the group with the best design. After two hours of hard-work, the LCS teams made four unique designs for the challenge. Although our teams did not win the challenge, it was a good experience for everyone involved.

Despite not winning the overall competition, the team of Mingze Lin, Edward Tian, Asic Chen and Greta Liu earned the Subaru Engineering Excellence award for the most innovative design. Congratulations to all participants: Samson Tso, Zhibo Ye, Simon Miller, Simon Burwell, Jonah Lehman, Cameron Maltman, Daniel Wang, Nate Hough, Aikansha Chawla, Alexa Armstrong, Riya Soni and Valerie Smith.
