On Friday, December 11, the Lakefield College School music department presented its annual Winter Concert. Students in Charge of Music, Alex Babineau ’16, Laura Lamont ’16 and Daniel Wang ’16 acted as hilarious and informative Masters of Ceremonies. The concert was upbeat and beautiful. The musicians should feel proud of their excellent performances.
The performance featured the school's accomplished Lorelei Consort and the LakEFFECT Jazz Ensemble. The Lorelei Singers offered Spanish, French and English carols that were presented with flair. Improvised solos in the jazz band by Daniel Wang (alto saxophone) and Liam Kaller (trumpet) left the audience in awe. The school's graduating drum kit player, Alex Babineau, drove the band through three great charts with excellent skill.
Performances by the Concert Band and Concert Choir were fantastic. The groups are certainly in full swing, with a great number of new and returning students, and a range of staff members offering their musical gifts as well. The Concert Band's new bass clarinettist, Jheeven Salvarajah ’19 , performed an excellent solo to Sweet Caroline in their The Best of Glee medley. The Concert Choir's jazz arrangement of Carol of the Bells was amazing, and James Taylor's You've Got a Friend was sensitively performed.
The school's brand new Rock Choir was a real hit. With the popular X Ambassadors song Renegades and the holiday favourite Baby, Please come Home, students were able to have a great time performing music.
Lareina Liu ’17 and Godfrey Tse ’17 on flutes, along with professional accompanist Shareen Roxborough, offered the audience a chance to sing two well-loved carols, Silent Night and Oh Come All Ye Faithful.
Finally, two special offerings by accomplished student musicians illustrated some of the amazing talent that is alive and well at LCS. Maggie-Lu MacLean ’18 and Ivan Sun’s ’17 performance of the second movement of Mozart's Sonata in G major (for violin and piano, K. 301) and pianist Lareina Liu's performance of Hicken's The Bell Carol were truly spectacular.
