Honouring Tradition: Dìa de Los Muertos at LCS

This week, Lakefield College School celebrated Dìa de Los Muertos, embracing the vibrant traditions of this Mexican holiday that honours and remembers those who have passed.

On Monday, November 3, the celebration began with a themed lunch that delighted the senses, featuring pulled chicken soft tacos, Mexican-inspired red rice, molletes, corn salad, and churros with chocolate sauce. The menu was thoughtfully created in the dining hall with input from the DEI Club and International Club, ensuring a celebration that reflected both tradition and community. Adding a special touch, students enjoyed handmade pan de muertos prepared by Ms. Dalrymple’s Grade 10 Spanish class, who worked alongside Aramark manager Alaura Kennedy to bring these traditional breads to life.

Meanwhile, our Grade 12 Spanish students engaged in a meaningful cultural project by creating “calaveritas de azúcar” (sugar skulls) and building altars to honour famous figures from the Spanish-speaking world who have passed away. These altars offered a thoughtful space to remember and celebrate the lives and legacies of those who have shaped history, culture, and the arts.

Through these activities, students not only enjoyed traditional foods and crafts but also gained a deeper understanding of the values of memory, respect, and cultural celebration embedded in Dìa de Los Muertos. It was a week of learning, creativity, and reflection, bringing the LCS community together in honouring a rich cultural tradition.
