Building Suicide Alertness Skills Through safeTALK Training
On Saturday, November 22, 2025, 27 of our residential Student In Charge (SICs) took part in a half-day safeTALK (Suicide Alertness for Everyone) training session delivered by Jack Veitch, Manager of Community Engagement and Education with our local branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association.
safeTALK is an internationally recognized program designed to build suicide alertness skills. Over the course of the workshop, students learned how to identify when someone may be having thoughts of suicide, how to ask directly and compassionately about those thoughts, and how to connect individuals with resources and supports that can help keep them safe and reinforce their choice to live. The training also provided opportunities to practise these skills through guided discussions and real-world scenarios.
This marks the fourth safeTALK training Jack has delivered at LCS in recent years, reflecting the school’s ongoing commitment to prioritizing student wellbeing and equipping youth with the tools to support one another.
LCS remains dedicated to fostering a supportive community where mental health education, safety, empathy, and help-seeking behaviours are encouraged and strengthened.
