A Classroom Visit from Dr. Robert W. Park

By Mr. Iain Beaumont

This week, students in Mr. Beaumont’s HSP3U: Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology and Sociology class were “visited” over Skype by Dr. Robert W. Park, acting chair of Archaeology at the University of Waterloo, Ontario. Dr. Park shared with students the importance of archaeological study in today’s world; the impact of archaeology on historical Knowledge; and background information on Dr. Park’s most recent work with the Canadian Franklin Expedition, in Nunavut. Dr. Park visited the class at an opportune time as all students enrolled in HSP3U prepare for the simulated Archaeological Dig: one of the authentic learning experiences offered to students in this course throughout the year.

Dr. Park’s visit highlighted the importance of the care, dedication, and meticulousness that an archaeologist undertakes as they complete their fieldwork. As an Anthropologist, Dr. Park was able to share with students the cultural impact that Archaeologists have upon our Knowledge of historical and present-day cultures across the world (even sharing with us a 40,000-year-old stone “flake,” a tool used by Neanderthal cultures).

Lakefield College School thanks Dr. Park for his keen interest in speaking with students enrolled in this course and providing them with a valuable, and unique experience.
