Michelle Mackey from CityNews Visits Lakefield College School

Students in Mr. Bemrose and Ms. Bugeia’s Outdoor Education Classes welcomed weather reporter and journalist, Michelle Mackey from CityTV to discuss her journey and career as a reporter. Michelle has a special connection to LCS; her sister, Paige ’11 is an alumna and Michelle is a self-proclaimed “Moodie House” girl by proxy.

Michelle began her career as a performer in a local Peterborough high school where Mr. Bemrose taught her (at the time) in Musical Theatre. Michelle had a passion for performing but wasn’t sure how to parlay her interests into a career. After high school, Michelle attended Trent University where she discovered her passion for media. Michelle began her career at The Weather Network and has since worked as a reporter for CityTV and Rogers Media. Her message to our students was that it’s possible to turn your hobbies into a successful career. She encouraged students to consider how they spend their free time and think about the ways in which they could pursue their passions, professionally to build a life that brings them joy.

Michelle is also a mental health advocate and she shared about the mental health initiatives she is passionate about.

Following her presentation, students practiced their “weather presenter” voices for Michelle, who encouraged and coached them along the way. Laughter erupted as students tried their best to speak clearly, slowly, and with the cadence of a TV reporter.

Thank you to Michelle for speaking with our students today!
