The LCS School Life Class Spreads School Spirit | Winter Carnival 2022

Last week, our community “hit pause” on our typical routines to participate in a range of mood-boosting activities coordinated by our School Life class. Every year, our senior students plan and facilitate dozens of events designed to engage their peers, keep spirits high, and spread joy. In winter, these events focus on combatting the winter blues and as a result, winter spirit week has become a longstanding tradition at LCS. Every year, our students look forward to three key winter events: Katchewanooka Rod (K-Rod), Winter Carnival, and Ted Pope Day.

School-wide events, such as Winter Carnival take months to organize and students often begin planning in September/October. When working on these events, students learn to create goals, work together, and formulate detailed plans. This year, our School Life class had the additional challenge of planning these events as health and safety measures ebbed and flowed and the weather fluctuated. Despite these challenges, our Grads successfully planned and executed Winter Carnival for our community to safely enjoy.

We’d like to thank the students in the School Life Class for their enthusiasm, positivity, and kindness in organizing safe events for our community. Winter Carnival was a huge success and added some cheer to the cold winter months.

“After our school endured another month of remote classes in January due to COVID, it was important for everyone to decompress from the stress and anxiety. I felt school events like Winter Carnival and K-Rod can create distractions that lift everybody's spirits. Seeing all of the students having fun in the snow makes the planning crew's time and efforts worthwhile. This is why the students in SLC are motivated to help plan community events—we want to spread fun and joy all over our campus and help the spirits soar.” - Sihan ’22

Winter Carnival

On Thursday, February 10, the entire school headed outdoors to participate in a full day of rotational activities. Stations were set up in the Grove, near Harris Field, and at our Northcote Campus. Activities for the day included: human curling on Bob Armstrong Rink, “find the duck”, tobogganing tic tac toe, an obstacle course, s’mores around the campfire, maple taffy, Beaver Tails, a luge run, and horse-drawn sleigh rides through the woods.

We are so grateful for all of the individuals who were involved in organizing this event and ensuring our community stayed safe while having fun. Thank you to the School Life Class, Garrett Hart (Manager, Outdoors Every Day), Bruce McMahon, Brian McCaw (Facilities Manager), the maintenance staff, the Aramark staff, and LCS staff; they had a tremendous impact on making the day so positive by joining in on snowball fights with the students, engaging in meaningful conversations, taking pictures, and more.

"Events like winter carnival and K-Rod help to bring our school community closer. They give staff and students an opportunity to take a break while enjoying time in the outdoors. You can feel the energy throughout the school as major events approach, and even once they finish. People look forward to these unique events weeks, and even months in advance! Spirit events are such a significant part of our community at LCS." - Cassi ’22

After such a successful Winter Carnival, we can't wait for K-Rod, which has been postponed due to rainy weather.
