Off to the Woods

By Peter Andras

Each year, Lakefield College School graduating students travel north to Algonquin Park for the annual, and much anticipated, Algonquin Expedition.  This 4 day, 3 night canoeing trip is the time-honoured initiation into the leadership role of the Grade 12 class. Although, some of the decisions could seem a matter of life and death to some, this safe and enjoyable trip into the Canadian Wilderness has become a traditional start to the Grade 12 Leadership year at The Grove.

On the morning of September 3, the Grads collected their remaining gear, fresh food and headed for the busses.  The entire entourage pulled out of the school a few minutes after 9:00 a.m. to embark on the two and a half hour trip north to Algonquin Park.  Once there, the girls’ trips travel on a circular route to the south of Highway 60 and the boys travel north of Highway 60 on a similar circular route.  The groups consisted of 6-7 students with an accompanying staff duo, made up of faculty, heads and assistant Heads of House and staff. There were a total of 130 staff and students on the trips.

Over the course of the trip the weather cooperated beautifully.  It was sunny and warm during the day and cool and clear at night.  It poured rain on the final night, but late enough that all were warm and dry in their tents.  Light breezes and a few small stretches of head winds were the greatest challenges on the water.  The groups came together, working hard on some of the long portages to carry the heavy food barrels and canoes across the rough terrain.  On the boys’ trip there were 13 portages with a combined distance of 7.5 km and a total trip distance of just shy of 90 km and the girls travelled an equally impressive 50 km with 14 portages with a combined distance of 6.8 km.

The days were long but their spirits prevailed with many positive stories of triumph and fun.  All of the students returned safely on Saturday, September 6 ready to immerse themselves in their leadership conference to start the new school year head on. With new friendships formed with staff and students they will file away one of their first grad year memories at the start of their final year as a student at The Grove.
