Contemporary Self-Portraits

By Tayler Morencie

The Grade 12 Visual Arts students curated an exhibition of contemporary self-portraiture and poetry which was on display in the Bryan Jones Theatre Lobby February 28 through March 3.

The students began this project by surveying friends and family and brainstorming metaphors and symbols for their personalities and character traits. The feedback from this activity served as the inspiration for the visual content in the paintings, and the language and structure of the poems. The canvases were stretched and prepared by the students, an activity that they really enjoyed participating in. The paintings are 2' x 3' in size and painted using acrylic paint.
