Athletics Action

1st Girls’ Basketball
This week, the 1st Girls’ Basketball team hosted Trafalgar Castle in quarter-final action and it was evident from the opening tip-off that our players have learned an incredible amount from the beginning of the season. They have been very committed and open to feedback. Each member of the team celebrates successes and supports each other in times of difficulty. Coaches Baillie Allen and Dave Krocker share, “We have enjoyed every practice, every game - as we are immersed with a group of players who care about each other, the game, their school and see the power of being on a team sharing collective goals. We are proud of their playoff victory today, at home, in front of their supportive fans, with a final score of 33-23. More important, we are proud of their learning and their willingness to compete.” The girls will now head to Albert College to play in the Final Four.

1st Boys’ Soccer
The 1st Boys' Soccer team came out strongly in the first few minutes of their quarter-final game against Holy Trinity School (HTS) on Wednesday.  The team knew that the match would test their physical and mental toughness, and it certainly did.  With Vito Kier playing striker alongside Eli Shannon, the two dominated the attack with Vito finding the back of the net in the first 2 minutes of the game.  HTS was quick to tie it up, and then found the net again, with LCS down 2-1 for what seemed like an eternity.  LCS never settled - the boys supported one another and pushed each other to dig deep and pick up their game, and that they did with Eli Shannon scoring a goal with the ball floating in front of the net to tie it up.  Nearing the 80th minute, nerves were challenged with the possibility of overtime-play looming over our heads.  Pedro Zapata was able to capitalize on an opportunity, chip the ball over the keeper’s head, and scored what ended up being the winning goal.  With 10 minutes still remaining, play continued to go back and forth, with HTS pushing back hard and emotions running high.  Finally, the referee blew the whistle and LCS won the game 3-2.

The team now moves on to the Final Four and will face Villanova College in the semi-finals at UCC on Friday November 3, 2017.  This will be a very challenging match, especially given the intensity of the HTS match - but the team is ready for another tough battle.  The coaches are incredibly proud of the team's effort this week and throughout the season so far, as each and every one of them has shown their physical and mental toughness.  We also want to thank the amazingly supportive, energetic and enthusiastic home crowd that came out to this week’s match - it certainly helped motivate the team to never give up.

2nd Girls’ Field Hockey
Trafalgar Castle arrived on Matthews Field to challenge LCS in our final game of the regular season. The girls were ready to rise to this challenge. Within the first few minutes of play, Alina Schlau scored a goal, which was then followed by another goal by Taryn Walsh. In the second half, Olivia Vaughan had a breakaway and scored her first goal of the season! This, again, was followed by Taryn Walsh scoring her second goal of the game. The Jr. Girls’ Field Hockey finished with a score of 4-0, securing a spot in second place as we enter the playoffs. The girls on this team have worked hard all season to improve their skills, and should feel very proud of what they have accomplished as they head off to Oshawa to play in Final Four action on Friday.
