Enrichment Through Cross-Curricular Learning

By Di Rogers

The Grade 9 students spent a full day in Toronto on November 16 exploring enriched learning content that integrated their science, outdoor education, geography and English courses. They participated in three programs at the Ontario Science Centre with the highlight being the Mars Simulation Activity. Students were assigned a specific role such as chief communication officer, electrical engineer, pilot, geologist, news reporter, etc. Each with a set of instructions to follow,  together the team had to respond to challenges such as high radiation levels, low fuel levels and an impending dust storm. The simulation year was 2076 and students were able to experience problem solving, both from the Mission Control Base on Mars and while on the Mars Spacecraft Shuttle. The IMAX film A Beautiful Planet provided stunning views of Earth from the International Space Station.  Continued discussion of how humans are impacting Earth will continue in geography and science.  In the planetarium, students were introduced to the motion of the planets and stars in our night sky.

The day ended at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto where we saw Curious Incident of a Dog in the Night-Time. It was a fabulous performance supported by incredible light and sound technology. All Grade 9 students have been reading this book by Mark Haddon in their English classes and great discussions have been unfolding  along the themes of empathy and perspective, along with the transition from text to stage. The play and book both also have great connections to lessons in science that will be drawn upon  while we continue to study the unit on space.
