1st Girls’ Soccer
Coaches: Jess Carbone, Janice Runza, Amy McGrath, Leisa Wierenga
The 1st Girls’ Soccer team travelled to Albert College this week to play their first match of the season. The game marked the first time the whole team was together on the pitch. Though the girls were nervous, they came out strongly and worked very well together managing to win 4-0.

I would love to elaborate on how each of the 20 members of the team contributed to today's success but decided to just recant the goals.
  • Anna Rasmus scored the first goal of the game around the 15-minute mark. As the LCS girls forced pressure around the net Albert managed to clear it. Anna playing the last man back, had a huge strike from just inside the centre line. The ball managed to find its way past the 11 Albert players and land in the back of the net.
  • With about 10 minutes remaining in the half Clara Mindjimba was able to sneak one past the goalie. With a cross from Kennedy Bardawill that slipped through the goalie's hands, Clara was in perfect position to finish.
  • The third goal came about halfway through the second half from Nikki Cannon. Emmi Matsusaki with the assist, gave a beautiful pass from the endline into the middle of the 18-yard box where Nikki was able to pass two defenders and strike the ball just to the left of the keeper.
  • The final goal was courtesy of Ally Lovick. Dribbling the ball to the top left of the 18-yard box, she shot the ball across the net having it placed perfectly in the top right corner.
It was a very exciting game to watch all the girls played exceptionally well! The coaches are looking forward to the rest of the season and to having the team bring their best effort and elevated level of enthusiasm and support. Keep working hard, ladies.

1st Rowing
Coaches: Su Armstrong, Luisa Roberts, Tobey Gullick
The 1st Rowing team is training hard as we wait for warmer temperatures to clear some ice.  On Saturday morning’s practice LCS rowers were treated to a guest coach. Jeremiah Brown, a 2012 Canadian Olympic rower, dropped into our practice at Trent's Carol Love Tank to give the team some tips. Jeremiah won a silver medal at the 2012 Beijing Olympics in the Men's 8 Crew. His experience is documented in his newly released book The 4 Year Olympian: From First Stroke to Olympic Medallist.

Jeremiah shared his inspirational messages that "discipline gives you freedom" and the lessons one learns while training can prepare you for life. Jeremiah both coached and jumped into the LCS crew line-up. His enthusiasm for rowing was captivating. With lots of new hints and inspiration, the rowers are keen to be on the water later this week.

1st Girls’ Tennis
Coaches: Grant Elson, Sarah Thompson
The 1st Girls’ Tennis team played their first double-header of the season against St. Clement’s School and Toronto French School. In the first match against St. Clement’s School, Anna Maxwell and Ali Hyland won their match but it was not enough as SCS was able to edge a 4-2 team victory. The doubles pairings that had not played on a court together prior to the matches, used this first match as a learning experiences and to calm their nerves.

In the match against Toronto French School, Abbey Murray and Alina Schlau
won in comfortable fashion, hitting their stride early in their second match. Jette Oberbeck and Shirley Li dominated the court with a beating so hard that Valentina Gutierrez Ramirez was asked to play for the other team to try and slow them down! Alejandra Porcar smiled her way through a smashing 8-1 victory and not even breaking a sweat. But, there was ample sweat, heart, and emotion on court 2 as Anna Maxwell found herself down 7-4. Anna showed extreme grit and clawed back to force a tiebreak. Again, Anna started from behind, down 5-3 and constantly going to her sore right shoulder between points. Attacking on the opponents weak second serve, Anna used both sides of the court to get her opponent on the run and with extreme exhaustion, Anna threw the final punch, and landed a victory for herself and LCS (and my first as an LCS coach). LCS 4 - TFS 2.

I am so proud of these ladies who have not had a chance to play on the courts without snow falling from the skies. If you see them in the hallways congratulate them on their perseverance, courage, and professionalism. Truly magical!

1st Boys’ Tennis
Coaches: Grant Elson, Sarah Thompson
The 1st Boys’ Tennis team kicked off their season with a double header against St. Andrew’s College and Toronto French School.

Robin Anstoetz returned to the courts unsure about how his season would begin with a shortage of court time prior to the first match. He came out firing, and went up 7-4. Robin lost his touch momentarily and found himself in a close 7-6 match before getting back on the winning train to complete a marathon 8-6 victory. In his second match, he strutted his way through to an 8-3 win. However he was unable to hit the ‘tweener shot like Federer. He promises to complete on of these before seasons end, stay tuned.

Shunya Sunami, the quiet leader of the LCS tennis team, was up against a tough opponent. He was able to put together some strong rallies and crafty play but came up short. In his second match, Shunya found his swagger and his stride, completing the match with poise and sportsmanship. The first serve percentage went up and so did his confidence as he finished with an 8-0 victory!

In his first singles play in his illustrious LCS career, Nic Small battled hard and stayed composed against his SAC opponent. Unfortunately he lost this match but remained proud of his play and ready for match two. Poor TFS should have known the kid from the island wouldn’t stay down too long. Nic took advantage of a soft second serve and controlled the court all match long. A thrilling 8-6 victory to give LCS the sweep in the singles and our first team win of 2018!

Pablo Ponce de Leon and Jeff Zheng were welcomed to senior tennis with a less than warm welcome, a 8-0 loss and a couple of punishing shots that the boys took in stride. Matt Neville and Conor Foster also lost the first match, and so Coach Elson switch things up for the matches against TFS. Matt and Jeff were paired up and struggled to find the service box, falling to TFS. Conor and Pablo were the early favourite against two rookies of the game from TFS. The unusual and scrappy play of TFS had the boys battling for every point. Conor smashed a few aces, Pablo volleyed the ball ever so gently that TFS was on the ropes, fighting for air. In the tiebreaker, TFS pulled off some spectacular shots and edged out LCS.

All 7 of these men were thrilled to get a team win. We look forward to our next match, at home on Saturday, April 28 versus UCC.

1st Ultimate
Coaches: Erica Chellew, Greg Mallett
Guess what happens on a frisbee field in the rain? The disc flies faster, the turf becomes a skating rink and rivers of murky puddles flow freely through cleats. None of this stopped this LCS team from taking the turf with determination in the first game of the season at Bayview Glen this week. With ten new players out of 18, we had no idea what to expect. But what we got was the best: tremendous defensive blocks, continuous sprinting and many, many questions. Our loss truly felt like a win.

The best part of the day was watching the players work together to learn. Ultimate is the ultimate team sport; there is no forward movement without all members working together. Thanks so much to our Grade 10 veterans and to team Captain Charlie Hooke-Wood for all the admirable leadership and support.

We were too wrapped up in the game to take photos until the bus but please enjoy our "meal money smiles" And Jack Zhu - a senior who is trying a new sport for his last term here at Lakefield. His declared that his heart was hurting after the game - we know his pain. It hurts to love a sport this much!
