Our students are thriving in a collaborative and creative environment as they create music for our exciting new record label, Grove Records. With guidance from award-winning musician, songwriter, and producer Rob Wells as well as LCS teachers Geoff Bemrose and Sam Wilson, our students are getting a real taste of what it’s like to work in the music industry.

The LCS Physics class was assigned a culminating project of designing balloon-powered cars. Students experimented with different materials, calculated potential outcomes, and practiced different assembly techniques to convert potential energy into kinetic energy!

Our Fall Athletics season culminated in a demonstration of skill, perseverance, and grit during Friday Night Lights on Friday, November 6, 2020. Featuring halftime performances through live theatre, the LCS Dance Company, and our Jazz Band, this event was truly a demonstration of how students and staff have safely and creatively found ways to express and pursue their co-curricular passions.

On Wednesday, September 23, 2020, as part of Wellness Wednesday, the whole school came together to run and walk in honour of Canadian hero, Terry Fox. Terry’s message of strength and perseverance was channeled as students completed as many laps as possible around campus.

LCS was thrilled to welcome new and returning students in September 2020! Orientation week is always a fun opportunity for students to explore the campus, meet their peers and teachers, and prepare for the school year.

At LCS, our students create lifelong friendships that make saying goodbye to graduates a bittersweet moment. Our Grade 11 students created a send-off message for the graduating class of 2020. Students thanked their graduating peers for being role models, mentors, teammates, and friends.

LCS faculty and staff sing the school's hymn, Jerusalem. One of the long standing traditions at LCS, grounded in our Anglican heritage, Jerusalem has been sung by generations of students and staff since Headmaster Alexander Mackenzie (1895-1940).

On December 17, 2019, LCS Co-Head Students, Santiago Paz and Madia McGowan addressed out school community to share some highlights from the year as well as hopes they had for the new year.

In March, the Lakefield College School 2020 Dance Showcase lit up the Bryan Jones Theatre and featured 30 dance performances, most of which were choreographed by students.

Camp Medeba offers Outdoor Education students valuable learning opportunities in leadership, team building, and community as they challenge themselves to try something new, learn different skills, and work together with their peers.

In Feburary 2020, LCS students enjoyed Winter Carnival activities, including sleigh rides, canoe toboggan races, frisbee, and more. Every season offers new opportunities to grow, connect, and learn together.

Intersession days occur periodically throughout the year, each grounded in themes that reflect the school’s value of educating the whole person. With programming developed for each grade level, intersession days offer unique opportunities for students to reflect on, question, and engage in activities designed to complement and enrich their in-class learning experience.

The annual Katchewanooka Rod (K-Rod) is a spirit event unique to Lakefield College School, which brings everyone outdoors to enjoy the winter season together. Paper Houses compete in teams of seven students in slalom, long-distance and sprint races to pull one musher across the finish line. The combination of music, fireworks and festivity makes it a special evening to enjoy time in community with one another.

Every few months, we like to reflect on the LCS activities and events our students have engaged in that year. We love to see what inspires and excites our students the most. These are our highlights from Fall 2020.

In their physics unit, the Grade 10 Science class at LCS studied optics - how light reflects and refracts - by dissecting a cow eye. This hands on activity allowed students to integrate their lesson with a practical experience.

Ted Pope Day is named after an Old Boy who attended the Grove from 1939-1942. Ted Pope loved the thrill of adventure, and he found it skiing, mountain climbing and car racing. He was responsible for redefining the scope of downhill skiing, expanding into new areas with the addition of lifts, jumps, and inter-scholastic competition. Every year, LCS students celebrate Ted Pope Day by enjoying some of his favourite activities.

In December 2019, the LCS Music Department presented its annual Winter Concert. Performances by the Concert Band and Concert Choir were fantastic.

The MOvember Polar Dip is a time when staff and students alike brave the icy waters of Lake Katchewanooka. Movember’s aim from the beginning has been to “change the face of men’s health”. This event reminds us that we’re all in this together, even if it hurts a little.

For intersession, students took part in a Mystery Substance Lab in which they were tasked with using scientific methods to determine what substance they had been given.

On Tuesday, November 5, 2019 more than 130 students participated in the creation of a moving Remembrance Day service, a cross-curricular collaborative project which features Grade 11 drama, Grade 10 history and Grade 10/11 curricular dance students.

For intersession day, students took part in a Positivity Party! Students circulated through ten stations with exercises designed to bolster and cultivate their capacity to see their life through a more positive lens.

As a part of the first unit of the Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology course, Grade 11 students participated in a simulated archaeological dig. After the dig, students studied the artifacts and connected their findings with teachings from their lesson.

For over 20 years, the Grade 12 Outdoor Education class has participated in a Crisis Management Simulation, which incorporates communication and collaboration in a hands-on learning experience. This year, the crisis simulation involved five people who were in the woods on a camp out when trees fell, leaving them injured and stranded.

At the beginning of every year, our Grade 12 students challenge themselves while exploring the beautiful wilderness of Ontario on a four-day canoe trip in Algonquin Park.

On Saturday, September 28, 2019, we welcomed hundreds of visitors to campus to celebrate our annual Fall Fair/Home to the Grove Reunion Weekend! While the weather was unfortunately worse than forecasted, in true ‘Outdoors Everyday’ fashion we didn’t let it spoil the fun!

On Friday, September 27, the halls came alive as the student body made their way to The Grove to rally. Inspired by Greta Thunberg and her global influence, the student leadership class, along with the LEAF environmental club, created and presented five initiatives to work towards during the year.

September's intersession week is designed to provide our students with a combination of experiential, curricular, and values-based learning opportunities that extend into the outdoors and help them feel at home in our community.

On June 15 we celebrated the 140th Closing Ceremonies at Lakefield College School. From the traditional grad jumps into Lake Katchewanooka after their final exams, the Grad vs Staff slo-pitch game, to the awards under the tent, the all-school photo at the waterfront, to the Closing Chapel service that was filled with joy and tears, Closing Week was full of emotion.

Chapel Talks are a longstanding tradition at LCS. Senior students are provided with the opportunity to present an 8-10 minute talk to the entire school, addressing the defining moments of their life and how these moments have shaped their identity. Look behind the scenes of LCS's Spring Play: “The Heart of Robin Hood". This play tells the untold story of how the legendary patron of the poor found his heart. The Heart of Robin Hood play features more 30 LCS students on and off stage!

The graduating class of 2019 shares where they’re going after completing their studies at LCS. This year’s class is going to over twenty different universities both in Canada and abroad!

From chariot races to the greasy watermelon relay, the waterslide to the jousting, and everything in between, this year's Gladiator Day was an epic paper house battle to remember.

Each year, Regatta Day is an event that everyone looks forward to - it’s a celebration of springtime, the outdoors and our beautiful campus. Our entire LCS community is invited to enjoy a day full of exciting activities and waterfront fun. On May 2019, HRH the Duke of York attended Regatta Day along with 36 former Head Students and 700 guests.

The Entrepreneurship Club allows students of all grades to bring forth ideas to improve the school and/or initiate new causes at the school.

One of our students designed a mural for the Wave Skate Park in Lakefield to both represent and inspire the community.

Lakefield College School students present their artist talents in the form of music, song, and visual arts.

Lakefield College School offers a variety of sporting activities for students to practice and compete in. Some of the Winter sports students can enjoy include Alpine Skiing, Hockey, Nordic skiing, and Snowboard Racing.

Lakefield College School students designed a mural to display in the community garden.

Over the March Break, 10 students and two staff members travelled to Peru for a spirituality and service experience as part of our Global Learning program. We were eager to see what Peru had in store for us, and we were excited to experience a relaxing and restorative adventure.

The LCS Law class brought their Criminal Law unit to life when they participated in their Mock Trials. Students took on the role of Lawyers, Witnesses, Court Clerks and Jury Members. Each student had the opportunity to research, prepare and argue a case from either the Crown or Defence.

The LCS community celebrated Earth Day by spending time outside, planting a pollinator garden, and taking care of the community garden.

LCS celebrated Pride Week to show their support to the LGBTQ+ community. Students designed and sold Pride t-shirts and donated all proceeds to the LGBTQ+ Shelter for the Youth in Peterborough.

The LCS Rock Choir practiced some classic rock hits with rock and instrumentation.

The LCS Improv Club has fun flexing their comedic muscles. Students learn to think on the spot to respond to their peers and practice performing for an audience.

The Lakefield College School Dance Company's annual Dance Showcase, entitled "This is Now" took place in the Bryan Jones Theatre on February 27, 28 and March 1, 2019. The show is an original, creatively choreographed event showcasing the talents of the student dance team.

Students and staff at LCS worked to create a snowboard park to enjoy in the winter months and add a fun challenge to one of our students' favourite outdoor activities.

On Intersession Day in March 2019, students took part in a spoken word poetry circle. Students practiced reading poems with conviction and emotion to convey the meaning of the work they selected.

Ms. Hansler’s Grade 12 Law class participated in a mock crime scene activity where they lifted fingerprints, measured and sketched the crime scene, collected hair and fibre samples, and analyzed their findings to hypothesize what events took place.

Lakefield College School students attended the Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario Athletic Association (CISAA) for Nordic skiing in 2019.

LCS students surprised the Head of School, Anne Marie Kee with a student-powered sleigh ride!

The Chinese Food and Culture Festival began with a traditional dumpling-making workshop in the OE Kitchen. Thirty students participated, making somewhere between 600 and 800 dumplings which were enjoyed at dinner. It is safe to say that the 2019 Festival was a tremendous success, and we look forward to next year!

LEAF (Lakefield Environmental Action Force) is a long standing club at LCS that focuses on environmental stewardship. Through student led and run initiatives, LEAF works to make our LCS community better and the Village of Lakefield better.

Ted Pope attended the Grove from 1939-1942. He loved the thrill of adventure, and he found it skiing, mountain climbing, and car racing. The tradition of taking the whole school skiing for a day started in 1970 and has continued for 25 years in his honour.

From far down the hall you can hear a pulsing beat and laughter, the first indication that something is happening in Upper Hadden Hall. This is the Boyz Dance Club and it's led by Jimmy Chapman of NRG Breakdancing.

The LCS Jack Chapter exists to educate and enrich the LCS community through student-led initiatives that foster happiness and physical and mental wellbeing.

LCS students participate in the 24-hour Performing Arts Project where they have 24 hours to write, direct, act, sing, and perform a dramatic piece. After 24 hours of preparation, students perform their act for the entire school!

For intersession day in December 2018, female students had the opportunity to take part in an all-girls coding project. Students learned basic coding techniques and practiced their skills using exercises and games.

The Grade 10 students at LCS planned, designed, and built a float for the Lakefield Santa Claus Parade! Complete with tinsel, jumbo candy canes, and lights, their float was admired by the village!

LCS is proud to be one of the first high schools in Canada to stage the smash hit musical, Mamma Mia!

The Crisis Management Simulation has been an integral part of the Grade 12 Outdoor Education experience at Lakefield College School for almost 20 years. Combining amazing make-up, a story that involves multiple injured persons, an amazing outdoor wooded campus and usually a wet and cool late November day, the stage has always been set for an impactful and meaningful experience.

The LCS open art studio co-curricular offers students the opportunity to experiment with a variety of media - drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and more - to flex their creative muscles.

Career Day is an annual tradition at The Grove providing students with an opportunity to make a connection between their academic interests and future professional endeavors. In addition to this learning opportunity, Career Day gives students, alumni, parents and friends the occasion to develop meaningful connections for the future.

At our annual Remembrance Day ceremony, The Lorelei Consort sang “This is Me”.

El Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is an important cultural celebration held on November 1 and 2 in many parts of Mexico and many other Central American countries. It is a day of remembrance for loved ones who have passed away. In keeping with Mexican tradition, the students visited Lakefield's Hillside Cemetery and paid respects to and laid flowers on the graves of important, deceased members of the Grove community.

On November 20, 2018, LCS students attended the second annual Women’s Empowerment Conference. Students from various schools attended the event to identify ways to empower and amplify female voices in their community.

We are very proud to announce that Dasha Egudkina ’18 is this year’s Peter Dalglish Art Award recipient. The purpose of the award is to inspire, encourage and recognize artistic talent at Lakefield College School by acknowledging promising young artists and their future contributions to art in Canada and beyond.

Harvesting sap from maple trees to produce maple syrup has deep roots not only in Canadian history but also at The Grove (Lakefield College School). For LCS students, maple harvesting presents an experience they simply can’t get anywhere else. History teachers use it as a doorway to the past. Science teachers can show principles in action. Business teachers can illustrate a full-scale operation from production to finished product.
