Inclusivity at Lakefield College School

At Lakefield College School, inclusivity is not a program; it’s a lived experience. It begins with our belief that young people grow best when they are seen, known, and valued for who they are. Our students are part of a diverse, global community—intentionally cultivated to reflect a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. While roughly two-thirds of our students are Canadian, they live and learn alongside peers from more than 40 countries and 8 Canadian provinces.

Students experience this diversity not just as difference, but as opportunity. Our inclusive approach is rooted in relationships; students engage deeply with one another through shared experiences, whether around a Harkness table, on outdoor adventures, in their residences, or in moments of reflection and dialogue. Through these immersive, real-world interactions, they gain empathy, insight, and the confidence to engage meaningfully across cultures and perspectives. These relationships build character, foster belonging, and strengthen our community in powerful ways.

We believe learning through difference cultivates both confidence and humility—preparing students to thrive in a global society and lead with purpose.

Our Commitments

A Culture of Belonging

We work to ensure every student feels seen and supported. This includes cultivating spaces for student voice, ensuring wisdom traditions are respected, and building programs that reflect and celebrate the lived experiences of our community. Our Community and Connect and School Life classes support dialogue, leadership, and inclusive programming, while community Chapel reflects a range of identities and perspectives.

Access and Affordability

True inclusion means ensuring that a Lakefield education is within reach. Our tuition assistance program—including our Indigenous Leadership Bursary and Katchewanooka Scholarship full-support awards—welcomes students from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds, making space for teens from different walks of life to flourish here.

Learning Across Perspectives

We strive to cultivate intercultural understanding across curriculum, student clubs, speaker series, and house programming. Themes of equity, identity, and global awareness are embedded across disciplines; from Harkness discussions in English and intercultural case studies in History to ethics explorations in Science and Outdoor Education. This learning is deepened through initiatives like Round Square, our diversity and inclusion leaders, student-led clubs, and ongoing faculty development.

Leadership and Accountability

Every level of leadership at LCS—Board, Head of School, staff, faculty, and student leaders—shares responsibility for creating a respectful and inclusive school culture. Our school values were revised to reflect this commitment, with input from across the community. Ongoing reviews of admissions, hiring, and policy ensure diversity and inclusion are more than statements—they’re standards. We share training and education programs for students and staff and ensure that redress policies and procedures are transparent and accessible.

Respect for People and Planet

Our commitment to inclusivity extends to environmental responsibility. We believe that respect for the Earth and respect for people go hand-in-hand. Students engage with sustainability and stewardship through our regenerative educational farm, green industries coursework, and outdoor education programs, learning that inclusion and interdependence shape both human and ecological communities. We are dedicated to learning from our experiences, together, to determine the best path forward.
