Guidance & Advising

Guidance

At Lakefield College School, guidance is a process that begins in Grade 9 and extends until students are successfully settled in a university program. LCS’ small size and intimate environment have fostered the development of a guidance program attuned to students’ developmental needs and individual interests.

Advising

Each student at Lakefield College School has an Advisor to guide them through their academic and co-curricular programs. The Advisor’s role is that of a supportive adult, providing encouragement but also guiding the student toward autonomy, responsibility, and self-advocacy.

On an ongoing basis, the Advisor reviews the student’s academic progress, recommending appropriate courses of action to students and parents on the basis of academic achievement or, alternatively, academic weakness. Such recommendations could include considering an international exchange or a summer enrichment program; receiving additional tutoring in a particular subject area, or adding or limiting co-curricular activities to ensure that a student is involved, yet not over-extended.

Advisors meet with their students regularly in small “homeroom” groups to discuss current challenges and successes, develop goals, identify organizational strategies, and plan for upcoming academic work. In addition, Advisors check in routinely with their students to stay abreast of concerns.
