Learning from the Greats

By Garret Hart

As all rugby teams at LCS prepared to wrap up their seasons, our athletes had the good fortune to participate in a rugby skills clinic delivered by Al Charron (former Canadian National Team Captain and International professional player) and Duncan McNaughton (National Under 20 Women's coach and University of Ottawa Varsity Women's Coach) who travelled from Ottawa to spend an afternoon at LCS.

These two experienced coaches were joined by Emma and Afton, two students and varsity athletes currently playing for University of Ottawa Women's Rugby team. It was an exciting afternoon filled with action as the guest put our athletes through a series of drills working on improving passing, identifying good attacking lanes and, most importantly, teaching proper body position for players going into body contact and tackles. The emphasis on proper form is a key in all parts of the game but it it is of particular importance for players new to the sport so they can play this tough game in a safe and respectful manner.

After the session, Al was able to talk to the students about his time with the National Team and playing professionally in Europe. Duncan and Al then met with the coaches for a session to discuss coaching strategy, running practices and new developments in rugby at the national level. It was an informative and motivating session for our coaching staff and a thrill to host our guest coaches at The Grove.

A special thanks to LCS parent Jeff Moodie for helping make the connection with Mr. Charron and LCS 1st Girls' Rugby team coach Stephanie Kruzich for helping organize the visit after meeting Al at a coaching conference earlier in the year.
