Athletics Action

1st Girls’ Field Hockey
The 1st Girls’ Field Hockey team began its week of field hockey madness with a home game against the provincially ranked North Hastings team. It was an excellent game with lots of action for defense and offense, and LCS dominated most plays. The LCS girls lost, 2-1, but it feels like a win because the players owned their space, communicated their intentions and moved the ball with accuracy. With two more home games this week and an all-day tournament on Tuesday, we look forward to more opportunities to grow and work together as a team.

On Tuesday, the 1st Girls’ Field Hockey team had much to celebrate. In a full day tournament at Sunnybrook Park in Toronto, the girls owned the podium and dominated the field to take home the championship banner. The best part of the day was seeing them work together and support each other consistently, on and off the field. As our current #1 Fan, Dorothy Little, kept remarking to Coach King and Coach Chellew, "You are just so lucky to have such great girls on the team!". We are lucky!

The field hockey girls had yet another game on Wednesday where they lost a tough battle to Hillfield Strathallan. The play was pushed ahead by HSC in the first half but LCS rallied at halftime and appeared to own the field for the remainder of the game, coming back from a 3-0 deficit to end the game, 3-2. The athletes played with character and determination and did not give up on the ball. Field hockey week ends on Saturday with an away game against De La Salle in Toronto.

1st Boys’ Soccer
On Wednesday, September 28, the 1st Boys’ Soccer team played their first league game of the season against Greenwood College. LCS took the first half to find their stride but came out hard in the second half. Tristan Walsh tied the game up at 1-1 and the boys continued to press hard. With time winding down Andrew Maltman crossed the ball on to Eli Shannon who snuck it in to pull ahead 2-1. Unfortunately, Greenwood managed to tie things up with one minute left in play. The final score was 2-2. The boys continue to show progress and we look forward to seeing what the rest of the season has in store.

Jr. Boys’ Soccer
On a brisk afternoon at the Cherry Beach Park on the shores of Lake Ontario, the Jr. Boys' Soccer team took the field against Greenwood College.  The LCS boys opened the game with some strong ball movement, but were unable to break down the Greenwood strong back line. First-half goal keeper, Brendan Rutherford, made some strong saves, only allowing one to sneak through his hands.  In the second half, with a more aggressive defensive line and spreading out the ball to the wings, LCS began to create some scoring chances.  However, Greenwood's counter attack resulted in two goals against second-half goalie, Cal Lindsay. Fortunately, the boys in red and green continued to press the matter resulting in a late goal by Roy Lozano.

Jr. Boys’ Volleyball
The Jr. Boys’ Volleyball team began their season during Fall Fair with a big win over Greenwood College in five sets, 24-26, 25-23, 14-25, 25-20, 15-8. Great job, boys!

The Jr. Boys’ Volleyball team played again this week, on Wednesday against a strong team from Hillfield Strathallan. HSC won in three games, 13-25, 18-25, 10-15.
