Creative Collaboration at CIS Dance Fest

By Ms. Libby Dalrymple

The CIS Dance Fest is an annual event that brings together dancers from a variety of Ontario Independent schools. This is a marvelous opportunity for students who share a common passion to learn with and from each other through workshops and performance.

37 dancers from the Lakefield College School Dance Company and the Grade 12 dance class spent the day in Toronto at York University’s Faculty of Performing Arts participating in this event. During the morning, they took part in three different workshops run by professional dancers and choreographers. Dancers were able to challenge themselves and develop their skills in a variety of genres: Hip hop, Contemporary, Bollywood, Samba, African Fusion, Musical Theatre, and Chinese Traditional Dance.

After lunch and rehearsal time, the entire group of 240 dancers staged their own show with each school contributing a few dances to the program. The LCS Dance Company performed four dances from their repertoire that highlighted their range of talent in jazz, lyrical, contemporary, and acro. We are extremely proud of the fact that three of the pieces were choreographed by our students. The show culminated with helpful feedback from some of the workshop instructors who acted as adjudicators.

The CIS Dance Fest is a highlight of our season. The spirit of the event is one of celebration and collaboration among schools. After several months of working in our own studio focused on choreographing, practising and polishing dances for our Dance Showcase, it’s enriching and inspiring to be in a unique venue with a variety of dancers with a diverse range of ages and skills. The dancers reveled in the opportunity to spend a day immersed in something that they love!

Dancing on a different stage for a new audience also enabled the dancers to hone their performance skills before they take to the LCS stage on March 4-6 and dancing for the LCS community in the 2020 Showcase — “Ignite”!
