Discussing Entrepreneurship, Risk and Resilience with Chris Valentine ’86
Mr. Moffatt’s Grade 12 International Business class welcomed Chris Valentine ’86 as a guest speaker this week.
Chris is a passionate idea-driven entrepreneur who served as the President and founder of ESC, a corporate services company servicing more than 5,000 professional clients across Canada with due diligence and public record solutions for legal transactions, compliance, and risk management. Prior to ESC, Chris spearheaded corporate strategy, growth, and corporate development at Teranet Inc.
Chris shared how his career path led him to where he is today and what he learned along the way including how to listen and write to win, how to work cross culturally, how to lead compassionately, and how to cultivate a culture of curiosity. He shared invaluable insight for students considering entrepreneurship and advised them that “the true entrepreneur is the curious”. Entrepreneurs are constantly listening and testing new ideas with customers, learning not only how to do things but how to apply those skills and leverage them.
He is also passionate about enabling others to take risks. While this may sound counterintuitive to being taught to plan and prepare for what’s next, Chris explained how risk inherently includes failure and the importance of learning from those failures to succeed. He encouraged students to be resilient, to follow their passions and believe in their ideas, and to believe in themselves.
