The LEAF Club Takes on the Envirothon

After months of hard work, students in the LEAF club qualified for the Provincial Envirothon challenge

Envirothon allowed regional teams to complete a series of iNaturalist challenges throughout March and April – the more challenges the teams completed, the greater their chance of advancing to the Provincials. Some of the challenges included identifying trees, interpreting wildlife signs (i.e. animal tracks, scat, remains, etc.), identifying birds, analyzing ecosystems, and identifying spring ephemerals (i.e. trilliums, Trout Lilies, Early Blue Cohosh, Bloodroot, Dutchman's breeches, hepatica, Spring Beauty, etc.).

The winning teams were then invited to participate in the virtual provincial competition, hosted from May 17 to 19, 2021.

In this competition, students were required to prepare and present a timed presentation via Zoom. Teams were given a scenario and then had 48 hours to create a presentation. Our students were tasked with the goal of designing an urban downtown park that would increase residents’ access to green space while demonstrating nature-based solutions to climate change in a built environment.

Jana Rubel ’22, Caroline Chen ’21, Louise Prindiville-Porto ’22, Shirley Li ’21, and Shenda Fitton ’22 were led by Mr. Arsenault as they prepared their presentation: “One Nature” Sustainable Development Plan. The students worked together to create a development plan based on research and case studies that accounted for the existing ecosystem, members of the community, and wildlife in their given scenario.

Congratulations to these students for delivering a well-planned presentation to the judges! We look forward to hearing the final results from the Envirothon.
