From Theory to Practice: Grade 12 Law Class Conducts Mock Crime Scene Investigation

Ms. Hansler's Grade 12 Canadian and International Law class recently got hands-on experience in a mock crime scene activity. The students took on the role of investigators and worked in teams to process evidence from the fake crime scene.

To ensure that the process was as realistic as possible, each team took detailed notes, photographs and sketches of the crime scene before processing for evidence. The teams dusted for fingerprints, lifted fingerprints, and collected hairs and fibres, with all evidence and notes being sealed until analysis in class.

During the analysis stage, each team compared their fingerprints from the scene against potential suspects and used microscopes to examine and categorize their hair and fibre samples. The students were fortunate to have the assistance of Constable Nie and Constable Gay, who joined the class and offered guidance and insights into the investigation.

The mock crime scene activity provided the students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge they had learned in class to a real-life scenario. It also helped them develop important skills such as attention to detail, critical thinking, and collaboration. Overall, the activity was a great success and left the students with a better understanding and appreciation for the role of forensic investigators in solving crimes.
