Mathematics Enthusiasts Gather at Pickering College for Team Contest

On Monday, April 17, twelve students who enjoy recreational mathematics travelled to Pickering College to take part in a regional edition of the Canadian Team Mathematics Contest, which is coordinated through the University of Waterloo.

You may be thinking, "A team mathematics competition?”

Yes—such an event does exist!

Our students competed (for fun) in teams of six against eleven other teams representing eight other independent schools from around Ontario. The competition was comprised of:

  • An opening talk by Dr. Tyrone Ghaswala, an award-winning adjunct professor of Pure Mathematics and lecturer in the Mathematics department at the University of Waterloo.
  • 45 minutes to complete a series of 25 questions. This is too much for any individual student to complete, so there is a strategic element involved in deciding how the team will ensure that all 25 questions are completed accurately.
  • 45 minutes to complete a series of 10 questions, individually. All students on the team complete the same series of questions and scores for individuals are added to the team points total.
  • About half an hour to complete several rounds of a relay, where the answer that one team member produces for a question must be used by the second team member to complete their question, and so on.
Most importantly, the day was filled with collaboration and humour. Our students enjoyed working together to solve many challenging mathematics questions and had a chance to visit with students from other CAIS schools who share their interests in math.

Our first team of Veda Cunniffe ’26, Henry Hu ’26, David Li ’25, Dale Liu ’26, Chase Zhang ’26, and Fiona Zhou ’26 finished in seventh place overall with a total of 137 points out of 200.

Our second team, comprised of Evelyn Chen ’25, Hansen Chen ’25, Jacobo de Juan Millon ’23, Neil Shah ’26, Yoshi Miyakawa ’25, and Daisy Zhou ’25 were pleased to finish in second place overall, with a total of 158 points out of 200.

Congratulations to Jacobo de Juan Millon ’23 who was one of just four students out of seventy-eight competitors who earned a perfect score on the individual portion of the competition.
