Dog Sledding Adventure

"On Thursday March 2, 16 enthusiastic students and two staff members struck out for a three day, three night dog sled adventure," reports Assistant Housemaster Jen Horrigan. "The trip began with dinner and a stay at the very unique Algonquin Motel. After a hearty breakfast, the group left the last traces of civilization behind and headed into the wilderness of Algonquin Park.

"Over the course of the trip, students learned how to harness a dog, control a dog sled and how to care for their team. Everyone quickly found out that despite their small size, these dogs were much stronger than us humans fighting to control the sleds. Despite numerous thrills and spills, all dogs and humans returned in good shape.

"Each day, the group traveled approximately 30 km of hills and rough terrain. In the evenings, the dogs were put to bed and their human counterparts learned how to prepare the camp site, chop and split firewood, retrieve water from a frozen lake, and cook in the outdoors. A few brave souls bundled up and slept under the stars while the rest huddled together in the slightly warmer tents. "After three days of sun and rustic Canadian scenery, everyone returned in good spirits. With students representing countries such as Scotland, Germany, Australia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, the United States, as well as Canada, this was definitely an experience of a lifetime.

"Special thanks to the excellent wilderness guides from Choc Paw Adventures and of course to the lovable and hard working dogs. What a great trip!"
