The Bob Armstrong Rink a Year Later

Lakefield College School’s outdoor rink was officially opened in February, 2006. The rink is dedicated to Bob Armstrong (1931-1990), former housemaster, athletic director, coach, teacher, and friend, who influenced the lives of many LCS students (1963-1984).

This rink is unique in that it is an artificial ice surface, outdoors, with “wallboards”. The synthetic surface technically extends the ice season from late fall to early spring. Although the rink’s surface is usable before the snow falls, the seasonal drop in temperature this week ensures a good solid surface.

Ice skating, shinny and hockey have been a long-standing tradition at the Grove. One has only to look at the scores of historic pictures of “old boys” playing “pond hockey” in years past. Before the Bob Armstrong Rink, faculty and students would flood areas of the grounds in front of the residences, or drag shovels down to the lake.

The Bob Armstrong Rink has brought skating and ice hockey to a new level at LCS! Now in its second year of use, the surface is being enjoyed by students in physical education classes, intramural and recreational hockey (shinny), residential broomball, by staff and family ice-skating on weekends. We have international students (from Barbados) who have never skated before. With other students teaching them, they are learning to skate for the first time, and they are having a ball!

The rink schedule is packed with recreational hockey, SLASH after school, shinny, physical education classes, team practices, ice skating, and just plain having fun!

“Anyone can suit up, climb over the boards, and play hockey ... it’s about freedom with friends and experiencing Lakefield.”
John Hepburn ’68

“The rink is about more than our competitive hockey teams. It’s a place where kids can get out and play hockey or just skate; Canadian kids and kids from around the world who wouldn’t get this type of opportunity elsewhere. They’re outside on the ice, learning how to skate and play hockey, having fun with their friends – it’s a truly Canadian experience.”
Ian Armstrong, Director of Athletics, from The Grove News, Fall/Winter 2006
