This past week, students in Grade 10 Outdoor Education have been privileged to learn the art of canoe paddle making from a master.
Ray Kettlewell has been creating hand crafted canoe paddles for over 34 years in Ontario. He has developed several different designs that are now standards in the industry.
Mr. Kettlewell provided each student with a "paddle blank" (roughly shaped paddle) made from tulip wood milled locally in Kinmount, Ontario. He instructed the students how to safely use a hand held rasp to plane and shave the paddle to a smooth rounded finish. Everyone had to shape the paddle blade and carefully craft the handle to fit their own hand creating a custom grip.
The students will continue to work independently on their paddles; shaping, sanding and creating some unique design to identify their paddle. Several coats of varnish will be applied when the weather warms, and the students will have the chance to use their new custom made paddles before the year ends.
The staff and students in Grade 10 Outdoor Education would like to thank Mr. Kettlewell for taking the time to share his incredible skill and immense knowledge of his craft with us.
