On Monday, April 23, our Grade 11 Leadership in Outdoor Recreation students hosted 40 Grade 8 students from Monsignor O'Donoghue Catholic Elementary School in Peterborough. The day was designed to provide the visiting students with the opportunity to develop their leadership and communication skills.
Both of the LCS Grade 11 OE classes assumed complete ownership and responsibility for the day, applying many of their skills to facilitate this experience for our visitors. Overall, the experience was superb!
The day's schedule involved a 2 hour morning session on the low initiatives, followed by an amazing BBQ at the water front, and ended with another 2 hour session on the low initiatives in the afternoon. The LCS students did everything. Section B welcomed and lead the morning activities, with both sections helping to cook and prepare the BBQ. Section A took the afternoon session and bid our guests farewell.
The visiting teachers were completely 'blown away' by the sensitive and mature approach our students demonstrated. What impressed them most were the interpersonal skills that our Grade 11s used to connect with each individual. Observing the LCS 11s in action was truly an incredible experience as they ensured that every one of the Grade 8 visiting students had fun.
Our LCS Grade 11 OE students realized the gratification you receive, when you see a group of students develop over the course of a day. They also recognized the pride and ownership that they themselves demonstrated. And, coupled with their contagious enthusiasm, this created the ultimate recipe for success!
In the end, the Monsignor O'Donoghue students did not want to leave, and were so very greatful for their day. It goes without saying that it was the connection and relationships formed by the LCS 11s that provided a lasting and overwhlemingly positive impression. The greatest compliment possible was the waving hands and smiles as the bus pulled away and the hope that this can happen again next yeat.
A super day! Our students can do anything they put their minds to!
