The Bob Armstrong Rink

On Saturday, February 11, 2006, The Grove community celebrated a special event. LCS staff, students, alumni, past staff, and friends remembered Bob Armstrong, former faculty and housemaster (from 1963 to 1987), in a special dedication ceremony of the new outdoor Rink.

The Bob Armstrong Rink was dedicated in memory of a man who touched the lives of all who had the fortune to know him. We were proud to welcome back over 75 alumni and their families who participated in the day's events including an ongoing shinny game, snow soccer, Nordic skiing, a chili lunch, and the Olympics on the big screen in the theatre.

At noon, a special ceremony took place on the ice surface to bless and dedicate the rink. Special recognition was paid to John K. Hepburn '68, who spearheaded the idea for a permanent outdoor rink at LCS, reminiscent of his (and many other alumni) days at the school. John's leadership was acknowledged by former Head of School David Hadden and the Armstrong Family, including Bob's wife Jeanne; son Ian '83 and his wife, Susan, and their daughters Lindsay and Alexa; Bob's daughter Stephanie and her son Jake Martin.

Bob's spirit was felt by everyone who attended the event. Despite tumultuous winter weather we have been experiencing, Saturday came with sunny skies, crisp temperatures, and a lovely cover of snow on the campus. It was a truly celebratory event. As Kevin Malone '77 shared, "What an amazing tribute to Bob and the Armstorng family. The rink will certainly add to the 'Lakefield Difference.' If we only had the rink in 1977 we would have won the championship!"
