On Sunday, September 19, LCS had the privilege of hearing World Record Holder and Double Olympic Gold Medalist speedskater Catriona LeMay Doan speak about a sport she is passionate about.
It would be easy to focus solely upon the success of Catriona's career, but the message Catriona brought to the LCS community is just that - the importance of community - a healthy, active, vibrant community. Outside of skating, Catriona is the spokesperson and key advocate to having a speed skating oval built within our community of Lakefield. She is also a spokesperson and advocate for the Right to Play Foundation that believes that sport and activity is the right of all children globally.
It is her combined passions - the right to play, belief in community, and speed skating that left our LCS community feeling inspired to participate, try new sports, and support this new local initiative. Outside of the Olympic legacy that built the Calgary and Vancouver long track ovals, there are no other speed skating ovals accessible to Canadian children. The local Kawartha Quarks speed skating club skates at the Evinrude Centre and races primarily on the short track. Catriona challenged our community to get engaged and involved to better our local community and village of Lakefield. One could not help but be impressed with her message, her success and commitment to give back to a sport that has developed her commitment to excellence.
