A lot of chalk has been flying through the air in the Paul and Helene Desmarais Family Climbing Wall this year. There was a bit of blood mixed in with that, but they were just flesh wounds. We saw a great progression of abilities for everyone that participated this term. Some conquered their fear of heights, some solved more bouldering problems than they ever had, and some formed an addiction to the sport.
It was not all about climbing either. Students expanded their climbing skills by doing various focussed activities and games; add-on and technique sessions were programmed during the week, but by far the most popular activity was Matchstick. Two teams hid a small piece of tape and the other team had to find it within a certain period of time. The team who found the piece of duct tape in the shortest period of time won.
Every week we had a Bouldering Challenge, and the climber with the most points won a prize at the end. The Bouldering Challenge was set up to recognize not only the amount of bouldering problems solved, but also to recognize who had improved the most in any given day.
Travis Cove won the Bouldering Challenge for the early Fall term; his drive and motivation was infectious and he went from 8 bouldering problems that he completed on his first day to 47 on his last day.
In the Late Fall term Max Fondyga won the Bouldering Challenge; he was consistently pushing himself every day and he had climbed the most bouldering problems in total. He was also the first student to complete one of the most challenging bouldering problems on the Cave.
Congratulations should go to all of the climbers for a great fall.
