Medical School Legacy

It is an impressive feat to see an LCS alum go on to medical school - but it is even more impressive that all three Allen children are at medical school, and all at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland (RCSI).

Although Baillie ’09 is the oldest of the Allen children, she is not the first in her family to go to RCSI. Her uncle, aunt, and father all attended RCSI - and for Baillie, deciding where she wanted to go was an easy choice. Her determination and interest in RCSI comes from her family history at the school, more specifically because her father spent so much time there. He passed away a few years ago, and being at RCSI makes her “definitely feel closer to him being there, sitting in the same lecture halls he did and being taught by some of the same professors. It’s great.” Baillie enjoyed being the first of the three siblings to be in Ireland, and loved being able to “let loose a bit, without having to worry about setting an example for anyone.” Baillie is interested in orthopedics and ENT (ear, nose and throat) because “someone comes in ‘broken’ and they will leave fixed.”

Hillie ’10 wanted to go to RCSI and become a doctor when he was seven, and was the next Allen to move to Ireland. “I wanted to go to RCSI not because of the stereotypical reasons...I went because I could see myself become a doctor and nothing else. I don’t think I would enjoy anything else more than a medical career...I had been taking about going to RCSI for so long, I don’t think I ever really considered going to another school seriously.” Hillie found comfort in his older sister being at the same school because he knew that she “was going to go through the same thing as me...and that she could help guide me through my journey at medical school but also allow me to make my own choices.” Hillie is interest in orthopedics and general surgery, because he has always been a hands-on type of person, “...working with classic cars has very much influenced my interest in these fields.”

Abby ’12 is the latest Allen to head to Ireland to RCSI. People who know Abby know that she is very accident prone and that made Abby want to become a doctor to “explore those injuries and so much more...” Abby says she couldn’t “picture doing medicine anywhere else when I have seen firsthand the doctors RSCI puts out into the world.” Abby is most looking forward to being with Baillie and Hillie in Ireland because of “the new chapter it symbolizes in my life and that I finally get to be in the same country as my siblings again.”

Hillie says “It’s kind of crazy to think that all of us are going to be there. I felt the very same when we went to Lakefield together. We are a very close family and love to spend time with each other, so I am excited to have more of my family with me overseas.”

Although this will be the first year without an Allen at Lakefield College School in 6 years, we look forward to seeing what these three, and all of our other alumni, become over the next few years!
