In Memoriam

November 26, 2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a dear friend of Lakefield College School, Jeffrey Marshall, father of Stephen ’87, Patrick ’90 and Christopher ’96 and husband of school trustee Nancy Smith.

Jeffrey’s association with The Grove began in 1983 when Stephen began his first day of school. From the beginning of his relationship with the school, Jeffrey played an active role in fundraising and campaigns. In 1985, he joined the school’s Board of Govenors and was appointed Chair of the School Board in 1995. In 1996, he authored Empowering Ownership: Trusteeship at The Grove, a visionary document that redefined the governance structure of the school.

In 2005, he wrote Endowing our Future, creating a new vision and expanded mandate for the Lakefield College School Foundation. Jeffrey also played an instrumental role in recruiting many of the new foundation members and served as its Chair from 2008 to 2010. The changes in governance structure championed by Jeffrey are now recognized by Canadian independent schools as ground-breaking and, for many, the models of choice. In 1998, Jeffrey was granted the title of Honorary Alumnus – richly deserved recognition of the indelible impact his leadership has had on the entire Lakefield College School community.

In 1999, Jeffrey received the school’s highest volunteer honour, The Jeffrey Paige Rein Wadsworth Award for Volunteerism. This award recognizes trustees who exemplify Paige Wadsworth’s belief that “It is a Great Privilege to Serve.”

“Over the course of Jeffrey’s 27-year tenure as a Govenor and Trustee, no person has made a greater contribution to the mission, values and well-being of Lakefield College School,” shared Paul Desmarais Jr. ’73, Honorary Chair of the Lakefield College School Foundation and friend to Jeffrey.

In further recognition of Jeffrey’s incredible commitment to the school, a bursary was created in his name in 2010.

A service celebrating Jeffrey’s life will take place this Saturday, December 1st at 11:00 am at Ridley College Chapel in St. Catharines, Ontario. Please refer to the attached obituary and funeral information for further details.

I am so terribly sad to read this. Jeffrey was one of those rare human beings - a complete gentleman, rock solid on values, humble, genuine, treated everyone regardless of their position with kindness and respect, and had a huge love for The Grove as evidenced in all his tireless volunteer hours and dedication to the School. He will be sorely missed by so many. My deepest condolences to Nancy, Stephen, Patrick and Christoper and to all members of the Grove Community.
