Singing It Out!

By John Kraus

Arts Lakefield Musicians take centre stage a Peterborough Kiwanis

It has been, and will be a busy couple of weeks for Lakefield College School’s musicians. This week our singers have been putting their best foot forward as many have performed at our local Kiwanis Music Festival. On Monday the Lorelei Consort performed Nancy Telfer’s ‘Solitude’ and an arrangement of Mozart’s ‘Turkish March’, receiving a 1st place certificate for their performance. Adjudicator Markus Howard, praised the singers for their ‘dynamic control and focused sound’. Members of the cast of Arts Lakefield’s fall musical ‘Colours in the Storm’ presented the closing number from the opening act of the musical, ‘Comes the Time’, as part of the ensemble Musical Theatre class. Dressed in their costumes, our performers presented the ‘a capella’ number with great success, causing Mr. Howard to ‘generate chills’ as the cast presented the song. With simple staging but solid harmonies, our performers presented a powerful rendition and also earned a 1st place certificate. Special mention was made of Jodie Sloan’s ‘clear and haunting opening melody’ and Andreas Engel’s ‘rich, supporting sound’. The Grove musicians were not finished yet as Andreas teamed up with Emily Dunning and presented a beautiful performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Pie Jesu’, from his Requiem. A challenging piece for both singers, that was presented with poise and polish earning another 1st place certificate. Finally, Andreas, Jordan Ryder and Megan Exton combined to present a stirring performance of ‘A Heart Full of Love’ from the musical Les Miserables, earning another 1st place standing.

Since Monday, there have been several individual vocal performances by other LCS singers including Laura Lamont (a 1st place certificate), Liam Kaller (a 2nd place certificate) and Andreas Engel (a 2nd place certificate). There are others who performed later in the week and we will do our best to recap their performances next week.

Congratulations to all of our performers for representing Lakefield so well again this year.
