2nd Boys’ Soccer (written by Musinga Ntazinda)
Coaches: Tim Rollwagen, Adam Janssen
On October 4, Lakefield College School travelled to play against Pickering College. It was gloomy day to begin with on and off rain, but a good day for soccer nonetheless.
Lakefield College School won the coin toss and chose to defend the side with the wind in their favour, while Pickering started with the ball. It was a strong first half, controlling the ball in their end most of the time as our midfielders created many opportunities for strikers, Will and Musinga to take shots on the net. About 10 minutes into the half, Ben McShane had a perfect through ball were Musinga naturally chased after it and shot it into the left bottom corner. The team went WILD!!! It was a great start. The opposition started to play more physical and had a couple of chances to score. Jordan Gillis flew to save the ball just as nicely as his hair does in the wind. Just before the end of the half, Avard put a ball right in front of Musinga’s feet where he took a shot; unfortunately he didn’t have enough power to beat the keeper. The first half came to an end in our favour, 1-0.
With some rest and brief recap of the first half, the second had begun. The formation of the team had changed to one sweeper, four defenders, four midfielders and one striker. The team had some confusion at the beginning but got things together and continued as strong as they did in the first, until one unlucky rebound allowed PC to tie the game at 1-1. LCS was in awe, but kept their eyes open for the next scoring opportunity. You could feel the intensity rise in the air as each team rose to their feet hoping to grab the lead and hold onto it. Pickering College felt the urgency and scored putting them up by 2-1. Our defence rose to the occasion and had some unbelievable slide tackles unfortunately ending in the injuries of Estabrooks and Breadner. The team still kept their heads up high, having some amazing crosses by Elliot Cross for great scoring opportunities by McShane and Musinga. Some nice play between the LCS strikers led to a free kick taken by McShane, which went high over the crossbar. LCS continued to pressure and Musinga was tripped in the box, but no penalty kick was called. The game came to a close and Pickering took the ‘W’. It was a well fought battle but a couple bad plays left us disappointed coming home on the bus. And here I am “writing a novel” because this game will want to be remembered.
1st Girls’ Soccer
Coaches: David Krocker, Brent Hurley
On Friday, October 4, the 1st Girls’ Basketball team welcomed the Country Day School team to The Grove. These two teams have a history going back to last year, when LCS lost in the Championship game to CDS in a closely fought match. This time around, the LCS girls' team is facing some challenges which include major injuries and absent players due to exchange. Nevertheless, our girls came into the game optimistic about their chances. Helping out this game was Rachel Thomson, who is one of the many stars of the Jr. Girls’ Basketball team at LCS. The girls played tight defence and committed fewer turnovers than in their previous games, and this allowed LCS to go into halftime down only by three baskets. The second half saw the Lakefield College School squad commit to defence, as their half-court trap resulted in numerous fast break buckets. The girls were led by the strong rebounding and leadership of Lexie Krocker and Alexa Armstrong. Sammy Moody stepped up and played a strong game, as did Rachel Thomson. The final result was a win for LCS, with a score of 17-13, improving their league record to 2-2.
2nd Boys’ Soccer (written by Jonathan Florian)

On Wednesday, October 9, Lakefield College School travelled to De La Salle College in Toronto to play. LCS started strong with a quick goal by Musinga Ntazinda from a great through ball by Ben McShane. Shortly after, Musinga scored his second goal of the match to put LCS to an early 2-0 lead. De La Salle pressed hard and kept the ball in our end for most of the first half. At the midway point in the first half, Logan Breadner let a long bomb go from just inside De La Salle’s half that dropped just under the bar and past the keeper for the 3-0 lead. Near the end of the first half Thomas Estabrooks made a terrific one touch goal from a smart pass by Musinga to give LCS a 4-0 lead for the end of the first half.
De La Salle started the second half strong by keeping the ball in our end for the majority of the second half resulting in an own goal and a corner kick goal to make it 4-2 but that’s as close as they could get. In the end LCS got its first win of the season with the 4-2 win over De La Salle.
Jr. Girls’ Basketball
Coaches: Kevin Limeback, Bill Bentley
After an exhausting double-header last week, the girls of the Jr. Basketball team had a chance for redemption Wednesday against De La Salle College. Our hope was to surprise the opponent with our rejuvenated gameplay, but unfortunately DLS' man-on-man defence trumped our energy output. In the second quarter, Rachel Thomson, Sydnee Korculanic, Nina Burger and Delaney Smith were able to sneak in a basket, and with the strong attack and assists from Nina Burger, Fiona Murray was able to drive in two lay-ups in the second half. Even as DLS continued to run up the score in the final seconds, our girls never ceased to put forth a strong effort and they demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship. The final score was 44-14.
1st Cross Country

1st Boys’ Soccer
Coaches: Janice Runza, David Brown
The 1st Boys' Soccer team continued their winning streak by defeating Royal St. George's School on Wednesday, 3-2. Javier Faus was unstoppable and scored a hat trick! The team is well aware of the tough competition that lies ahead and is hoping to remain undefeated next week when they face Crestwood Prep on Wednesday at home and away at Bayview Glen on Friday. The coaches are proud of the efforts of this team and are looking forward to a busy week! Congratulations to all players.
Jr. Boys’ Soccer
Coaches: Danielle Labrosse, Colin Morris
A beautiful fall day was the perfect setting for a great soccer game for the Junior Boys’ Soccer team. Facing Bayview Glen, the boys came prepared and their game was on. We witnessed great passing, strong defence led by Sam Stainrod and spot on goalkeeping by Taylor Walsh who showed for the first time, a more aggressive style of play. The boys scored twice in the first have with Ross Ramsey hitting in Liam Sinclair’s rebound and Tristan Walsh scoring after a masterful pass form defender Abe Mello. In the second half, the boys continued to dominate with a second beautiful goal by Tristan Walsh and a perfect goal by Salomon Cohen who kicked it from outside de 18 yard box, into the top left corner of the net. With no goals against, it really was the perfect game.
1st Girls’ Field Hockey
Coaches: Amy Hollingsworth, Melissa Farwell
A busy week and a half for 1st Field Hockey! On Wednesday, October 2 the 1st Girls’ Field Hockey team made the long trek to Nichols School in Buffalo, NY. The LCS girls came out strong in the first half, however they fell short on the score board losing 4-1. Carolyn Marrelli-Dill continues to impress with her leadership in the goal and in her role as captain. Her no quit attitude inspires teammates when the going gets tough.
The LCS girls were not going to let the lost to Nichols hold them back, and they did not dwell on it. On October 3, they hosted Havergal College and the girls came out strong and with something to prove. LCS maintained possession for most of the game, and the girls worked very well as a team. Everyone contributed to the 2-0 win for LCS. Goals were scored by Skye Nadon and Caroline Dupuis. The shutout and second of the season was earned by Carolyn Marrelli-Dill.
On Saturday October 5, the LCS squad played their third game in four days travelling to Bishop Strachan School in Toronto. The girls were intently focussed on improving their chances at a playoff berth but fell short of the target dropping a 3-0 loss. The much smaller and unplayable muddy conditions took their toll and LCS would look forward to a rematch with Havergal.
The Havergal rematch started with excellent promise and the girls battled to the final whistle. Unfortunately the score does not reflect the 2-0 loss and certainly some awesome learning continues to take place.
