The February Mid-Term Break may have marked the starting of the final stretch of winter but this year it also offered the first real cold front of the season. Where better to experience a first real taste of winter but Canada's beautiful capital city, Ottawa. 30 students from all over the world did just that when they travelled to Ottawa for Winterlude, Canada's largest celebration of winter. The trip began with a thrilling NHL hockey game as the Ottawa Senators took on the Colorado Avalanche. LCS students cheered on alum Cody Ceci '11 as he and the Ottawa Senators battled hard in a close game. The music, the lights and the packed arena made for an exciting experience and left many students eager to watch more hockey.
The trip continued Friday with a tour of the Parliament buildings, a ride up the Peace Tower and a visit to the National Gallery of Art where highlights included the Modern Art gallery, a featured Monet exhibit and the famed Group of Seven gallery. The fun didn't stop there as students took to the outdoors for skating on the Rideau Canal (the longest skating rink in the world), a tour of the prize winning ice sculptures, shopping and a Friday night bowling party.
Saturday brought more fun and unfortunately more cold. With temperatures dropping to -40ºc, students were happy to be indoors touring the impressive Canadian War Museum and Canadian Museum of History. Time for shopping and a chance to try Ottawa's trademark taste sensation the "Beaver Tail" capped off the day along with social time in the warmth of the hotel.
Sunday brought more cold and students learned first hand that in Canadian winters sometimes buses don't start. Despite a slight delay, the group was soon on its way to sight seeing and shopping in cosmopolitan Montreal. A visit to Old Montreal and the Notre Dame Basilica offered some photo ops and the stores of Rue St Catherine offered the chance to get the latest fashions. The group then went for a Valentine's Dinner at East Side Mario's and got to catch the newest movie releases during their night at the movies.
Monday brought warmer weather and a fantastic close to the trip with a tour of Rideau Hall (home to Canada's Governor General) and an interactive visit to the Canadian Museum of Space and Aviation where students got to see close up the history of flight and even the famed Canadarm.
The trip was once again a popular way to embrace winter and experience the wonderful history and culture of Canada with friends and fun.
